How can I convince Vivaldi to offer a open with / download dialog on .pdf files ?
-
Whenever I click on a .pdf file, it opens directly in browser. What should be done to ask me what to do ? (i.e. either opening with the system's default .pdf viewer or save it locally, depending on momentary scope)

Open vivaldi://plugins and disable Chromium PDF Viewer. You can also hit Ctrl+S while in the PDF viewer to save it locally.

@An_dz Thanks, but I can't untick the box. Any idea why?
-
@An_dz That does not work. It just downloads PDF files automatically without asking. I want to open PDF files in my default PDF viewer. I think we need support for MIME types.

Now it's not a checkbox any longer, it's a text saying "Disable".

With "Always save downloads in default location" disabled a confirmation dialogue shows to me. If you want it to open in your default viewer automatically this is not possible.

Is that going to be something that Vivaldi can do anything about given that the PDF viewer is a Chromium feature? It would be nice if it had an "Open" icon (or hotkey) up there next to the "Save" icon, but it doesn't.
Usually, the built-in viewer is fine, which is why I don't want to disable it. Not always though, and in those cases I'd like to just open the PDF directly.

I think in those cases, the best one can do is use Save link as.. and then open the PDF from the Downloads panel.
I just added MIME type support to the Feature Requests thread.
It was a popular request for the 1.6 Feature Request thread, so the developers already know about it, but I added it again so that users can know it's already on the list.

Sorry for replying to an old topic, I just want to check if I have understood the current state of matters on opening PDFs through a third-party app in Vivaldi correctly:
I want to be able to open up all PDFs directly to Adobe. To do this I have to first uncheck the Enable Internal PDF Viewer option, and then click open in the save/open dialog box that appears once I click a PDF link.
However as a result of unchecking the Enable Internal PDF Viewer double clicking a PDF file from the download manager opens a blank page within the browser as it cannot open the PDF internally due to the option disabled.
Is this correct and is it working as intended?
It'd be useful to be able to launch the third-party app by double clicking the PDF file in the download panel.

@edoardo-giorgi In settings, Downloads, choose your downloads folder, and clear all of the options.
After you click the download link, click on Open on the Download dialogue:
The PDF file will be downloaded to your chosen folder and opened in your default PDF viewer. You won't need to open the download panel, but if you do open it later, you can reopen the PDF by double-clicking on the PDF in the download panel.

Is this correct and is it working as intended? That's definetely not working as intended, if you have the internal PDF viewer disabled double-cliking the file in Download Manager should open the pdf in the external viewer without opening tabs.
Please report this bug with step by step explanation, just as you did here and if possible with a link to a freely available PDF file on the web so the devs don't need to hunt for one to test.

Thank you @Pesala and @An_dz, for your support, having posted while travelling meant that by the time I got round to testing your suggestions and/or reporting it, the issue was already resolved. PDFs currently always open in the third-party PDF app and can open directly from double-clicking in the downloads panel without the need of unchecking the suggested options in the download options.
All the best and thank you.
