Inconsistent Vivaldi snapshot updates
-
I run Vivaldi snapshot as my default browser. Sometimes the update replaces the existing vivaldi.exe, and sometimes it installs as new_vivaldi.exe, leaving the previous vivaldi.exe in place. If I pin new_vivaldi to the taskbar it fails to launch ("The program has stopped working." is the error message). The only way I can make it work is to manually change the names of the two programs- new_vivaldi becomes vivaldi.exe and the old vivaldi.exe is renamed something else. With once-in-a-while updates this is not a problem, but with the recent rapid update cycles it becomes a PITA. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way I can just take the new updates and start viv from an existing taskbar icon? Win 7-64 Professional all up-to-date.

After clicking "Close Vivaldi and install" wait for the installer to actually start up before closing Vivaldi.

Thanks. I thought the installer closed vivaldi, but after reading your post I'm not certain that it wasn't me. I'll make sure on the next update.

So I just got today's snapshot. I left Vivaldi running, the installer closed it and installed as new_vivaldi, leaving the previous version as vivaldi.exe, requiring me to manually rename both. If I don't rename, links will open in the previous version. Am I the only one seeing this behavior?

I got today's update, clicked on install now, and waited for the installer to start, then I closed Vivaldi. The update went according to plan.

If that really is what's happening to you, you appear to be the only one seeing it.

If, in fact, the update installer is creating a new/updated vivaldi.exe file named new_vivaldi.exe instead of just replacing the existing vivaldi.exe file, it sounds as if the installation is malfunctioning or misdirecting at that point for some reason. Perhaps the original Vivaldi installation is not fully closing when the installer directs it, perhaps because a stubborn extension or Flash process is holding it open.

@Ayespy He's not the only one seeing this behaviour.
Maybe its a USB install, but if I close Vivaldi at once after clicking install, and before the installer starts showing the progress bar, I get the same problem with new_ vivaldi.exe in my Vivaldi folder.

After trying several times to get a proper install, I exported the bookmarks, uninstalled Vivaldi (making sure no dregs were left behind) and downloaded and installed the latest snapshot, then imported bookmarks (lost passwords, of course).
BTW, Viv closes so quickly after I click "Install now" I can't move fast enough to close it manually. I'll see what happens with the next update.Edit: To add to the confusion (my confusion anyway) I forgot to mention that even though it was new_vivaldi in the application data folder, the Control Panel programs list had it as vivaldi version 1.5.655.3

@justjohn - why did you lose passwords? Any install on the same machine under the same UUID can read them.

I removed all traces of Vivaldi before re-installing-- my own fault.

Removing and re-installing Vivaldi made no difference. The latest update installed as new_vivaldi.exe. I have only two extensions (Disconnect and ABP) and both were disabled. I fetched the entire 40MB file and installed it, all went well, It removed the older version and installed as vivaldi.exe, but that defeats the whole purpose of the incremental update process. Does anyone have an idea what might be happening here???

In case it's not just me, I filed a bug report VB-23119.
