More New Tab Functionality
-
I've been using FireFox (and it's derivatives) for many years and now I'm looking for a replacement browser and have settled on Vivaldi. One thing that I really miss is the ability to have new tabs open when entering a new URL, when using the search field, etc. Because I'm used to having this functionality (I used a FF extension called Tab Mix Plus). I know that I can use the alternate mouse button to achieve some of this functionality, but I'm set in my ways and I'd really like to get this functionality back. Can anyone please suggest an extension that will allow a new tab to open when I enter a new URL in the address field, use the search field, etc? Thanks for your help and suggestions.

I'm unaware of any extension specifically for that purpose.
of course there are the five ways to open a link in new tab (foreground, background, MMB, ctrl+enter and mouse gesture) but the feature to open the address in the URL bar in a new window (alt+enter) is broken at the moment. As soon as that bug is fixed, you will at least have a hotkey solution.
Otherwise, I'm not sure what to tell you. I'm often a bit bemused by users who want something new and different, but are then disappointed that Vivaldi doesn't act just like their old browser. I hope you can either adjust your habits, or that at some point something comes along to replicate the function in the manner to which you are accustomed.

Sorry to have bemused you. In fact, I don't want something new, rather I'm forced to change due to other limitations of my previous browsing platform. I said nothing about being disappointed, you inferred that, and I am fully cognizant of the fact that Vivaldi won't be able to replicate all of the functionality of my previous browser. I'm simply asking if anyone knows how I can implement this single functionality.

One way to do this is to use the Quick Command (F2) as a combined address/search bar.
Just Press F2 - enter url or search text in the "pop-up" - press enter, result is in a new tab -
TbGbe is right, and I'm sorry to have forgotten the F2 option. It does indeed open a typed or pasted URL as a new tab.
And, again, alt+enter will also be returning as a way to open anything in the URL bar as a new tab, as soon as the developers can get a durable fix on that bug. As best I can recall, the feature was introduced, then broken by an update, then fixed, then broken again by another update. One hopes a durable fix is in the offing.
Edit: In order to ensure that Quick Commands opens in new tab, you must make sure that the box is checked in settings/quick commands,

Can you get used to pressing Alt+Enter (changeable to Shift+Enter in settings)? That does exactly what you want in both address bar and search field

First, thanks to all for the suggestions, those are appreciated!
Also, thanks @Christoph142 for moderating and replying to my post.I am getting accustomed to manual methods of opening new tabs, but I still miss being able to just entering a new address or new search or clicking on a link and having a new tab open. I understand that some would not want this functionality but it's my preferred way and having these as options would be great.
The one that I miss most (and that has been the hardest habit for me to break) is entering text in the search bar and not having a way for that search (which, in my case opens DuckDuckGO) to open a new tab. I'm including a screenshot of a FF extension that I used to control how new tabs are created:
I'm pretty certain that this functionality is possible, because I see it each time I open the Vivaldi Settings Page, which always opens in a new tab with focus.
Again, I'm not expecting Vivaldi (or any other browsing platform) to fully replicate the functionality that I had in my previous browser, but I would really like to see more flexibility with tab creation.
Thanks!

Update:
So, I have Vivaldi working pretty much the way I like in regards to tabs with just 2 expections:
(Please remember that I am asking for these as options, not as forced functionality)
[ol]- Open New Tab from Search Field
- Open New Tab from Address Bar
[/ol]
Thanks for your consideration.

Big double dittos.
TabMixPlus is the best, and opening in a new tab is critical to my work flow. -

I'm still struggling to get used to it. Frequently I'll lose a page and have to start over. Why not make this a configurable setting? Is it a limitation of Chromium, or a design choice?

I don't think that it's a limitation because new tabs can be opened from bookmarks, when opening settings in a tab, even when opening the Vivaldi Community site from Help, so it apparent that opening pages in a new tab is possible.
Like you, I've lost pages because I'm used to (especially) the search field opening a new tab. I hope that this option is made available in a near-future release.
