Ads are slipping through with all adblockers
-
I normally use ublock origin for adblocking, and noticed something that I hadn't seen in a long time… an ad, blinking at me. I cleared both vivaldi's and ublock's caches, restarted the browser and still they got through. I ended up uninstalling ublock, clearing everything out of ./config related to it and reinstalling to no avail. Thinking this might be simply an issue with ublock, I tried several other ad blockers, and the issue repeats itself. Are there any more suggestions people around here can give? Oh, I'm on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.

Hi, I use Adblock, can you please add some links to pages with slipping ads?
I can check with latest Vivaldi snapshot and Chrome on Leap 42.Cheers, mib

If you're just talking about an occasional ad: Ad blockers check for substrings in URLs and element attributes to judge whether something is an ad. To do this, they subscribe to certain lists of common ad URL patterns and other attributes. (Various interested people maintain those lists.) It's by no means a guarantee that all ads will be caught.
If you have a blocker like uBlock Origin, you can set up a custom rule that blocks a particular image that slipped though by right-clicking on it and clicking "Block Element", then edit the match string in the overlay to be more generic if you want, and hit "Create" to save the filter. (You can later edit your saved filters by clicking the uBlock Origin extension button, pressing the little grey gear button at the top of the dropdown overlay, and in the settings go to "My Filters". (Instead of right-clicking, you can also click on the extension button and click the eyedropper button.)

Hmm, I can't currently reproduce that… As long as I have the usual 3rd party lists turned on, uBlock Origin seems does not seem to be having trouble with blocking ads on those sites.

No Ads & Lov 'n it ;}
in uBlock - The Eye Dropper Icon: "Element Picker Mode" for pesky junk that is hosted on site (WordPress Ads).
It can be an over kill…I use uBlock, uMatrix, Disconnect.me, Privacy Badger

I'll just wait a week until the next massive update decides to hit me, and see if it was just a temporary thing.
Edit: Everything is working again after a couple of updates. Aah, the joys of rolling releases.

i'm having a problem of sites opening up new unwanted tabs when i'm using all adblockers
-
Examples?
What are you seeing in the new tabs - could they be pop-ups which Vivaldi opens in tabs? -

Handling pop-up tabs is really outside the scope of what adblockers are designed to handle. To go beyond whatever in-built pop-up control browsers include, you need an addon that handles JavaScript requests like uMatrix or NoScript.

it doesn't seem a problem in Chrome / Opera / Firefox with the same adblockers
just tried uMatrix and that works, but, its not very user friendly for non-techy people

Right, my assertion is that those browsers all have better built-in pop-up handling than Vivaldi at the moment. The adblocker extensions are not related to that.
Certainly those browsers all have pop-up configuration in their Settings whereas as Vivaldi does not as far as I can see. Definitely something they should add, since this browser is aimed at power users.
