"Open File" downloads the file anyway?
-
Did a brief search on this topic but couldn't seem to find anything that addresses this issue: Choosing to "open file" seems to permanently download it in the default download location. In every other browser I've ever used, this option will typically save whatever it is that you are opening as a temporary file in a temporary files folder, not as a permanent copy in your default download location. Is this normal behavior? If not, are the devs aware of and working on it?

The developers have never mentioned whether this is the intended behavior for the foreseeable future, or whether they eventually mean to modify it to be more conventional. It's been brought up a number of times, but no one has ever said "we're keeping it that way" or "yeah, we're gonna change that."
In the meantime, it's not a showstopper - just an oddity. I actually kind of like it, because Temp folders have a way of getting fat while you're not looking. If I know right where every one of my downloads lands, I get to choose whether to archive them or nuke 'em.

I am one of those requesting this to become a user-configurable item.
Personally, I hate having my download folder filled with crappy temporary items. I work on Linux (yes I know this subforum is about the Windows version, but this kind of features are usually shared among different OSes) where the maintenance of temp folder(s) is usually automatic.
OTOH, having everything in the downloads folder forces ppl to lose time discriminating what needs to be kept from what can be dumped, for what hardly seems to be an advantage.
As Vivaldi seems to be centered on customizability¸ I hope the developers will chose to give us the final choice on the matter.
Just my 2 cents.

I don't see it as a problem because I'm used to check download folder EVERY TIME, so it's never cluttered, always empty. Once a file is downloaded it gets moved to where it belongs, or deleted if not needed anymore, by Me, I don't let any program decide for me what to do with them.
Take it as an habit, keep your file system clean. -
iAN, while I don't agree with your approach, it is perfectly fine for me that you (and others) find the situation satisfying.
However, since I and many others feel the opposite way, I would just like for the developers to give us options.Cris
