Vivaldi refuses to launch
-
Hey everyone, I've been using V for a couple of months now, and so far I've been very happy to have found a worthy successor to the beloved Opera 12. However, shortly after updating to 1.2, it refused to launch anymore. Not directly after updating, mind you, which makes it just weirder. What happens is that I click on the V icon - either on taskbar or desktop - and it highlights for about 3 seconds in the taskbar, then fades out again. Nothing else. I can't find a Vivaldi process launching in the task manager, either. I de-installed via Windows software management and re-installed with a fresh download from the website -- no change. My system: Windows 7 Pro 64Bit with 4G of ram. No changes to the system were made. OS and Vivaldi are installed on an SSD. Any idea what might be going on?

Any idea what might be going on?Try this:
- press Win+R, type "vivaldi –no-sandbox" without quotes, press ok
- go to vivaldi://flags/#disable-direct-write, disable DirectWrite
- restart your browser
P.S.: Which videocard and its driver version do you use?

Hello and thanks for the replies.
In response to your questions:
– no, I haven't installed any additional extensions recently (in the last few months).
-- my video card is an AMD Radeon 5770 and the driver, I paste, 15.20.1062-150715a-187142C
Last driver update was a couple of weeks ago.Unfortunately, Vivaldi refuses to start also in no-sandbox mode, so I wasn't able to try disabling direct write.
BUT I just discovered a Vivaldi process in the task manager.
vivaldi.exe *32, 0% CPU, 104K RAM. Does nothing, and can't be killed. I clicked End Task over and over and it just won't go away. Trying a reboot now, then I'll report back.Edit:
After reboot. The zombie process is gone, but still, trying to run vivaldi --no-sandbox does nothing. Doesn't create a task.Oh I forget: I did delete everything from %Appdata%, then reinstalled fresh.

If you deleted your profile folder, the browser should pretty much just start, in all cases - no special tactics (like –no sandbox) required. The only exception I have seen to this is when 3P software or even Windows Defender/Windows firewall blocks it.
Have you any third-party security software? Do you know how to whitelist a program with Windows firewall and Windows Defender? (Google if not)

Wrong. I'd assisted a user few days ago and the browser didn't start without "–no-sandbox" even after deleting profile folder.

That's just weird. I wonder what system quirks could cause something like that? I have Vivaldi on eight machines and have never seen anything like that.
-
New observation: when I try to start V in no-sandbox via command line, it very briefly creates two tasks - just about a second, only visible when I sort the task list alphabetically - then it vanishes again.
I have Avast antivirus, but that never caused any trouble before.
Even if this were a Firewall issue, the system should prompt me to ask how it should handle the programm, not just kill the task right away.I mean, I like to believe I'm not totally computer illiterate, but this leaves me entirely stumped.
I don't want to go back to stupid Firefox! :-o -
Avast has done this to users before.
-
Hm, I just tried disabling Avast – Vivaldi behaviour still didn't change.

"Disabling" 3P security software usually doesn't disable it. It just changes it to weak settings so that your user-inputted commands are not ignored. Uninstalling it usually (not always) can disable it. Also, sometimes security software and its services can be prevented from starting in msconfig.
But 3P security software can "lock" an app from running, and once it does, it's locked whether the security software is running afterward or not. Some such locks can remain after 3P software is uninsalled. (CAVEAT: I DON'T KNOW if AVAST works like this or not.) Some 3P security software leaves detritus behind which can be difficult to clean up. For instance, it can install a "disallow run" registry setting for applications it has identified as "malicious," and if the same software that blocked the app isn't used to whitelist it (and sometimes each sub-application must be whitelisted individually as well) then it can be difficult to find and undo the instances of "disallowrun" in the registry.

Hmm. Well I scanned the registry for entries concerning Vivaldi, but didn't find anything suspicious.

I'm stumped.

I ran into same problem with Vivaldi x86 on Windows machine.
Vivaldi won't launch by clicking on shortcut, instead I need to go to installation folder and double-click vivaldi.exe.Try it, it might work for you
