Benefit of Default profile rebuilding [aka; short-term pain, longer-term pleasure].

I use Linux, but think this info would be relevant for all platforms. Target audience here is mainly V-Newbies, as V-Veterans will already know & probably do this stuff. Following is a copy & paste of my personal V-Note to myself made for future reference. Snapshot 1.2.485.14 ... Phew!!! [REBUILT my Default profile] I spent several hours yesterday installing this latest SS, initially trialling in my VMs, before finally doing in Tower & Lappy. Its predecessor, 1.2.479.8, was a dog, a really bad very buggy SS that i eventually rolled back from on Tower to 1.2.470.11, & accordingly never even bothered upgrading Lappy to. Even 1.2.470.11 was far from nice [eg, suffering from constant scroll & autoscroll interruptions of several seconds each time, & also frequent video streaming pauses], but in most other respects it remained broadly usable. The key decision, the one that returned V to a fun satisfying browser again with 1.2.485.14, was to REBUILD my Default profile from scratch, most especially Bookmarks & Top Sites. I did these: 1. Upgrade V from repository as usual, but do not launch. 2. Make a backup copy [in different directory] of these Default's ONE folder & NINE files: - Local Storage/ - Bookmarks - Current Session - Current Tabs - Custom Dictionary.txt - Favicons - History - Last Session - Last Tabs - Notes 3. Rename or move current profile's Default folder. 4. Launch Vivaldi, thus creating a new clean Default folder. Close V again. 5. Move the backed-up folder/files of #2, into the new Default folder, overwriting the new clean ones. 6. Relaunch V. 7. As consequence of deliberately NOT retaining my original Default's other content, it's now necessary to tediously do all these: a. Reinstall ALL my Extensions. Due to having retained my original Local Storage folder, relevant Extensions containing my actual data [eg, OneTab, SessionBuddy, NoteBoard] will be ok still, but all Extensions needing my custom settings need to be re-customised. b. Recreate each relevant webpage's Login credentials, resaving into the new file when prompted. c. Recreate all my Speed Dials' thumbnails (ie, into the new Top Sites [strike]folder[/strike] --> edit: file), via F5. Though the preceding items are tedious, this one is onerous; there's over 500 of them, & it takes several hours to complete. 8. This process reduced Top Sites from over 300 MB to under 70 MB. 9. Unfortunately 1.2.479.8's serious bugs wrt bookmarks [per my several 1.2.479.8 blog comments] persisted initially also in 1.2.485.14, so: a. I had the idea to MOVE V's Bookmarks file into Slimjet [any chromium browser would suffice], from which i Exported it as HTML file. b. Reopened V, Imported HTML file, observed that most of the bad V bookmarks behaviour was now gone (especially including that once again i can Save bookmarks, & Settings no longer goes gaga). Yay. [however annoying intermittent bug remains in Bookmarks Panel, wherein sometimes i can only scroll down 1/2 - 2/3 before it bounces back up to top]. c. This process reduced Bookmarks file from 8.2 MB to 1.6 MB. 10. Following this LONG process my Snapshot 1.2.485.14 V now sings! Many webpages seem to open a bit faster, Scroll & Autoscroll finally work continuously again, & video streams no longer stutter. Yay. 11. I piloted all the above in my Kubuntu VM, but greatly shortened the process for my Mint VM, & my main Mint OS in Tower & Lappy, simply by copying my rebuilt Kubuntu V Default folder to the others. It's true that i still had to recreate the Login data in each V again, but i was delighted to find that i did NOT have to also reinstall all my Extensions again; they [& their settings] survived across each Default's copy/paste instance. The biggest subsequent time-saving of course was not having to repeat my Bookmarks & Top Sites files' rebuilding.

It is always good to do a clean install from time to time when installing lots of snapshots.
I did this:
[ol]
- Moved my entire Vivaldi folder to C:\temp\ (534 Mbytes) as a backup
- Installed the latest build using the standalone installation
- Imported my data from Opera 12.17
- Copied my custom search engines from Opera 12.17 using copy/paste
- Reorganised my bookmarks and speed dial using drag and drop in the bookmarks panel
[/ol]
My Vivaldi folder is now 275 Mbytes, so I guess a lot of junk has been cleaned out. No doubt it will soon accumulate again after browsing for a few weeks.

Is there a way to save the extension SETTINGS? Not the extensions itself, just the settings? If not what would be necessary to backup the extensions including the settings?
