Signing up to Vivaldi Social reveals email address…
-
@Obiwan2208 Here is my question: If I want to share my new location with followers from Twitter what is my exact address? Is it
@[email protected]
or is it
@[email protected] ? -
@PamelaBwell It's the former, so:
@[email protected]
.Alternatively, you could also share the url to your profile instead of the mastodon handle, so:
https://social.vivaldi.net/@UserName
. -
@yojimbo274064400 as @PamelaBwell said the first one is for people already are in Mastodon; they can search you and then follow.
The second is for anybody can look your profile even aren't singed up in Mastodon.
-
@AltCode Thank you so much! I think I got it!
-
@yojimbo274064400 While this is true, using the blog or forum will put your email address out there too. Our email addresses have never been a secret, Vivaldi Social doesn’t change anything about it.
-
While our email addresses are not secret having them out there to see so easily will surely increase the chances of being doxxed, receiving emails we don't want such as dicpics etc and increase the chances of people attempting to scam us.
I know technically that this is our Mastadon username but it is so very close to the Vivaldi email address they are not mutually exclusive. -
@AltCode not sure if the form
@[email protected]
will resolve correctly on cross-instance references (→ vivaldi.net/@user → 404).Using
@[email protected]
is properly get kicked up the chain (vivaldi.social/@user
→ social.vivaldi.net/@user).@jane-n will this be an issue or solved in the future?
- change displayed handle to
@[email protected]
- add proper redirection for
vivaldi.net/@user
Seems there is enough magic happening in the background to reference
social.vivaldi.net/@user
, so apparently a non-issue. - change displayed handle to
-
@becm Agreed, they should change it to
@vivaldi.social
- if possible. I think maybe it's too late for that now though, not sure how such a change would break federation etc...This might also be the cause of some client errors (just a theory):
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/81044/social-graph-profile-hidden-using-desktop-clientsSome API testing from another instance:

@Pathduck Far too late. Was a deliberate choice, nothing to do about it now I don’t think.
-
@luetage well, at least now we have a prominent case of
instance
!=domain
, so client authors may have to fix their interpretation of remote resource lookup. -

Not really true. It's your full user name in Mastodon terms.
ie. @me@instance
Where "me" is my user and where "instance" it's the instance (server) where I connect.
⋮Our instance (server) is vivaldi.net, more specific is social.vivaldi.net.
It's a bad coincidence that our Mastodon server matches our mail server: Vivaldi.net.I would disagree as this was an obvious outcome of sharing username between environments, i.e.
@[email protected]
and[email protected]

Maybe making it clear that publishing a blog, participating on the forum, and/or joining Vivaldi Social will expose your email address is all that is needed to give those who wish to keep their email address private an opportunity to do so.
-
@yojimbo274064400 Well, making it clear… It’s obvious. As soon as your account name is written out somewhere, everyone knows your email address. But I can calm your concerns insofar that I never received any amount of extensive spam since I had this account. In the past year hardly anything, at least I can’t recall it.
-
@luetage It's not really obvious to someone who primarily uses the Vivaldi browser, and liked the sound of Vivaldi Social.
I just happen to have a vivaldi email address as it wasn't any bother to set one up, it gave me browser cloud sync, etc. In time, I might move away from gmail to vivaldi mail.
I didn't expect, nor want, this email address to be exposed to the Mastodon world. In my opinion, the spam will appear one day, it's just a matter of time. I cannot understand the lack of requirement re: email address privacy.
Getting set up on Mastodon with Vivaldi Social was supposed to be a 5 minute job, it's turning into a headache that needs a Delete button pressing. -
@kevinmckeown It hasn’t happened to me in 7 years. But then again I only use the
vivaldi.net
address for Vivaldi stuff and a few other related things. You might want to use it for everything and then you might receive spam and blame it on the exposure of the email account name, when in fact it had nothing to do with it.One should have more than one email address anyway. Divide personal matters, meaningful and throwaway
online accounts/activities and don’t mix it up is my advice. Keeping track of all your email accounts is easy with the Vivaldi mail client ^^ Now you made me sound like an advertisement, I’m not sure how to feel about this. -
@kevinmckeown My Vivaldi email address has been no secret for 8 years. It has always been obvious that it is my username (exposed in thousands of Google search results) + @vivaldi.net. That being the case, I have never received a single spam email at that address. Never. Not one.
Still, it is a statistical certainty that it's going to happen sooner or later, and exposure via Mastodon only increases (can a certainty be increased?) that likelihood. This is one of those things that I fully expect Mastodon to address. Its founder has even already noted this concern.
