Overlay bookmarks with imported bookmarks(not imported bookmarks folder)
-
Opera has been doing it to me for years. Now this is the same except in Opera with the old fashioned bookmarks.adr file I could use a text editor and just remove the "imported bookmarks" line and my imported bookmarks would overlay all the bookmarks. They changed to some pseudo xml format to make it tougher. Same thing now with Vivaldi. My bookmarks are relegated to an "imported bookmarks" folder instead of overlaying all the bookmark content. Please tell me there is a tool to delete folders from the Bookmarks file without learning a new programming language. It is such a time waster to have to go through this with every new browser flavor to come down the pike.

I have imported my 1,300 bookmarks a few times since using Vivaldi. I just dragged and dropped the folders from the "Imported from Opera" folder to the root folder,. I don't think it's too onerous, but we could do with the sort order not being inverted, and separators would be useful.
To work around the sort order problem,
[ol]- Create a temporary folder
- Drag and drop all of the imported folder to that temporary folder
- Now drag and drop all of those folders from there to the root folder
[/ol]

Thanks for the reply. I do not have an "imported from" folder. What I have is a file named Bookmarks in C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default
For some reason it is the devil to import bookmarks in every browser other than the first time. Even then I can uninstall the browser and/or delete the bookmarks file, then import, only to come up with nothing at all.
It was so much easier when Transmute actually worked. The only way I could get a fairly recent set of bookmarks was to import from chrome. But if I try to import to chrome from Firefox to get the latest bookmarks, that does not want to import. So things just go down the chain and down the drain.
I am at the point of rolling back system snapshots just to avoid the browsers becoming unusable. There has to be an easier way.
To make things even more fun if I have multiple copies of Firefox on my system when I do the import of course it does not tell me which one is the source. I have to make that FF default and hope it picks it up. It usually doesn't.

Thanks for the reply. I do not have an "imported from" folder..
You do. As you said earlier: My bookmarks are relegated to an "imported bookmarks" folder.
That's what I referred to. A folder in the Bookmarks Panel, which is created whenever you import bookmarks. It will be named "Import from Firefox," or "Imported from Opera," etc.
You can select all of the subfolders inside that folder, and move them to the root.
Synchronising will come in due course. Meanwhile, one has to use third-party tools or workaround to merge bookmarks from different sources.

I see what you mean now. I thought you meant an actual folder in the file system. After a lot of work deleting every browser but the version with the latest bookmarks as source I still could not force the correct selection of bookmarks. I resorted to importing the bookmarks.html file. Fortunately copying the Fast Dial folder onto the Bookmarks Tool Bar allowed me to select it as speed dial folder. After only about three hours of struggle all is well.
I am using the 64 bit Vivaldi. So far it runs well afa load times etc..
Thanks for the assist. I don't see a button to mark as solved so please consider it so.

I'll take care of that.

Ayespy already did it for you, but on this forum you can edit your first post at any time to select the green tick icon, which marks the thread as resolved in the forum index.
