Slower, slower... and no scrolling
-
I am on the current 5.3 version of V and I am having more and more problems with the browser. Two areas in particular are really troubling me: first, the browser, with every new version, gets slower and slower and slower... to the point that 5.3 is for many sites now almost unusable. (5.0, perhaps 5.1, was not nearly as bad, so I may have to downgrade, although that's clearly not a long-term strategy.)
Second, there's an increasing number of pages which simply don't scroll anymore, eg https://www.lv.com/insurance/driving-in-the-eu. The first (top) part of the page is shown but I just can't scroll down to see the rest. Anyone seen that? -
No.
I use one of the lesser known distros fossapup linux and vivaldi runs like a charm.
So much for the bragging from the buntu's and debians.
My laptop is over 15 years old and runs like new thanks to this wonderful little australian distro. -
@vt4711
Hi, disable add blocking for this page using the shield icon in the address bar and the page scroll.
No performance issues on:
Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite
Android 12
Vivaldi Android
5.3.2683.35Cheers, mib

@Priest72 Err... this is the Android subforum and I am not talking about Linux and laptops (in fact, I do use V with Debian and I don't have any performance probs there).
@mib2berlin THX for that... this works though I would never have guessed that ad blocking has something to do with page scrolling. Modern times, eh?
And I will check whether this helps with other pages where that happens.

And as to the slower and slower... I suspect this started in earnest around the version that introduced tab stacks (and I am using the Android version since beta). Perhaps I should try the last version w/o tab stacks though that's not ideal.
The hardware is a 2GB Huawei tablet and while that has never been an F1 performer it has been adequate, so far. -
@vt4711 Well I did try to reproduce the issue while having multiple tabs open and editing a video in the background so I could force Vivaldi to run on less resources but failed to do it. Well it's useless to try to reproduce since the computing power between my tab (Samsung S7 Tab) and yours is huge. Even if the browser has became heavy, I won't see much of a difference due to the 6gb ram and a capable processor. But the weaker devices are ought to take a massive hit. I hope Vivaldi tries to optimise itself more for low end devices
-
@vt4711, @KumarArnim1 Even on older devices Vivaldi, e.g. Android 7, 1.8 GB RAM, runs quite fast and smoothly.
-
@ingolftopf Well, in that case all is good
Such a general statement doesn't help someone (for instance, me) when newer versions for that person are demonstrably slower, and even hang for five to ten seconds with just two or three tabs open and no video or audio running in any of them.
And before anyone tells me that this must be solely a problem of my tablet (which, as I have already stated, is not the fastest), I've observed a similar pattern, though less pronounced, on my 4GB Sony phone.
But I take the hint... "look elsewhere".

Well, to close this thing... I have downgraded to the final v5.0 of V and this is indeed a lot more usable than 5.3. Alas, relying on this version is not a viable long-term strategy.
Additionally, as mentioned in another thread, Vivaldi (the company) continues to ignore one of the most annoying bugs (for me) in the Android version, viz the not-working nicknames in bookmarks.
So reluctantly, it's good riddance... not only to IE but also to Vivaldi on Android .

What you said "bookmark's nickname" is this?
On my PC:
And on my Android phone:
-
@vt4711 I habe the same issue on my Smartphone. However, it is slow in general after going online. I suspect that a lot of Apps are competing about getting first. Signal wins ober telegram and Vivaldi often is last.
On the other hand, when using Smartphone as Hotspot, Vivaldi is fast on my tablet.
In short, my Smartphone isn't fast enough any more and Vivaldi is not the culprit.

I am not sure what your pics actually show as the quality is not great (or my eyesight ain't up to it).
What I mean is the field "Nickname" when you edit a bookmark (on Android, that field may be hidden at first; if so tap "Show more").
The really annoying bit is that the syncing from desktop to Android copies the bookmarks including all the nicknames, so the nicknames are all there on Android... but they are simply ignored by the browser.

I don't buy that. v5.0 of Vivaldi is tolerably fast on my tablet whereas v5.3 hangs at times and generally feels a good deal slower on the same hardware. So... what has changed between v5.0 and v5.3?
Anyway, case closed. I'll certainly keep V on the desktop but not on Android. It's gotten bigger and more bloated and now has reached the end of the road AFAIC.

@vt4711 Huawei tablets have many problems with Vivaldi...
I use one I, I know the pain!Yess after recent updates browser is slow and it crashes often when opening huge sites like reddit and GitHub (don't ask me why I use this site's on tab)
-
I have a similar problem as the op.
Up until recently I was very happy with the browser - with the feature set and also performance.
However, for the last several weeks, I believe with the introduction of 5.3, performance is very noticeably worse. I have around 20 tabs, no stacking.
Browser currently stalls and is generally sluggish, not all the time but quite frequently. Scrolling is slow and sometimes hangs, especially on sites with lots of media content, twitter for me seems particularly affected. With prolonged use it affects the general performance of the phone itself, though that gets back to normal fairly quickly after quitting V.
A rather big pain in the derrière, I'd be loath to give up on V for android.
Android 10 on a Sony phone 4 gb RAM.

I've also been getting unscrollable pages (e.g. www.theatlantic.com, even with ad blocking deactivated) and many freezes on my 4gb ram phone running Android 10. It's not usable for me any more I'm reluctantly moving to Firefox and will come back in a few months, hoping the issues will have been resolved.
-
ok so i just had this problem too and i think it's tab specific... and has nothing to do with the site your visiting or how powerful is your android device... and this is my take on this problem:
i browsing vivaldi for and all of a sudden i can't scroll .. i I tried to reload it but still the same... then I tried to go to other links within that page... they did open but still it wouldn't scroll... I jump to other tabs to see if the app is frozen ... the app was working fine and all other tabs where scrolling fine except that tab... I went back to the tab itself and it's still not scrolling ..
At the end I wanted to see if it's because of the page that was opened...so I copied the URL address and opened it in a new tab ... as I expected, the page was working and scrolling was fine.
P.S: this started to happen when i updated from vivaldi v5 to v5.3

I have posted the same issue and I notice the same thing as OP said, it was around the introduction of tab stacking. Both on my tablet ( Samsung Tab S4) and my phone (Samsung A52s) I have alot of tabs opened and the lag happened when there's a page loading, and increased when having more than certain tabs on a single stacked tabs ( I kept around 20-30) and the lag decreased for a bit when loading a page.
If compared to chrome on both of my devices, the both also have alot of tabs opened, which my phone having more than 400+ (I kept them from my highschool days for nostalgia), chrome are more responsive than vivaldi.
The reason I'm using vivaldi is for the tab switcher button. I hate swiping left and right just to open another tabs.
Yes, I'm a tabs hoarder
