Download and Installation
-
I have twice downloaded and attempted to install Vivaldi browser and both times it would not open. It shows as a shortcut and in my installed programs but will not open at all.

Maybe same problem(s) as https://vivaldi.net/en-US/forum/vivaldi-browser/10123-cannot-install-vivaldi-on-windows-7

Use Opera 12 or jdownloader to download it. They are able to resume the download

If I have to jump through hoops just to install this browser, it's not for me. When it's ready to be downloaded and installed just like any other program I may try it.

That's true.
Vivaldi has only just published its very first broadly usable version. But it still has a number of bugs, as new software always will. Now it's been my default browser for 15 months or so, and none of the bugs has really affected my daily use, but some people are definitely affected, if their use patterns bring them into contact with imperfections in the code.
So, new users may sometimes have to figure out why something doesn't work right, or accept a workaround for a feature that should "just work." So if a potential user lacks the fortitude to figure out an installation glitch (which, again, I've never had one - but a few people do, it turns out), then Vivaldi is not for that person. It's pretty certain that if they were to use it for a few days, they'd run into some kind of bug, throw up their hands, and walk away. No, at this point Vivaldi is for people with a little gleam in their eye, and a taste for novel experiences.

I can't use it for a few days nor for any time because it won't open. I have attempted again and using Internet Explorer (Previously Google Chrome) to download it. Therefore, there is no gleam in my eyes because I don't see Vivaldi at all.

I hope you'll be kind enough to report this as a bug at https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/ with as much information on your system as possible. I think you are the fourth or fifth person I've seen report that Vivaldi won't open for them, or that a process begins in Task Manager, but nothing is visible on the desktop. Yours is somewhat unique, because I think you're the first to report that the installer will download, but won't run. But there has to be some commonality between these cases that the developers can track down and solve.

Ok, I have tried 3 times to use Vivaldi and each time something on my computer corrupts Vivaldi, the first time I could not open it, the second I could not download anything and the third I could not open it again.
I have 4 browsers on my computer currently and have tried many more over the years and have never had a problem such as I am having with Vivaldi. I don't know what is corrupting it and i have no way of knowing but I really don't wish to try to find out, after innumerable browsers have worked over the years, including Opera in all it's editions I think that 3 times is enough.
Please advise me as to when you succeed in developing a browser that works and I will try again. -

It's usually some anti-virus software, which prevents a user from downloading and running stuff. Nothing unusual and not really Vivaldi Software's fault.
During Beta some false positives got reported, where "security products" confused the text string "Vivaldi Technologies" for a threat. It did go away once Vivaldi spelled it wrong.
So much for keeping your computer safe from niche browser products. :silly:

Try installing a standalone version of vivaldi; that might work…..

What is a "standalone" version?
Obviously, I am not the only one with this problem, from the other comments I have seen. Therefore, I conclude that there is something in Vivaldi's program that is defective. Until that is corrected, nothing will help us use this browser. You are wasting your time and money until it is corrected, the browser will not be used.
-
Putting out a product that 99.99% of users can use, is clearly not a waste of time or money.
As to your particular case, no one can correct anything as it affects you, without at least knowing what's different about your operation, or the guts of your machine.

No offense, but I think that a supposedly power user which Vivaldi is aimed to, should be able to deal with a broken download

You make an interesting point. It's a bit surprising to learn how many "power users" require everything handed to them on a silver platter. I used to write some code in the 70's, but no longer. I'm no technerd by any stretch of the imagination - I can't edit CSS or mod bundle.js, I'm a right noob and tyro on Linux - don't even know but about five console commands, but I can always figure out (or look up) how to make things work, if there's a way to do so. If a program can be optimized to match my preferences, I'll figure out how. If it can't, I'll figure out the best way to use it.
And yet, it seems some "power users" are easily frustrated. They present problems rather than solving them. What sort of "power" is that, one wonders? Again, The_Solutor, interesting point.

At least in my country the things changed a lot after the military service stopped to be mandatory.
I'm anything but a militarist, but the military service was a nice way to understand that in this life not everything is due.
iPhones and markets did the rest.

If a dozen different browsers work on my computer and yours does not, I assume that something in your browser is not compatible with my operating system. I am not that sophisticated a computer user that I can find the abnormality in your product or in my computer.
Thank you for your effort. -

Thank you for your effort.Sophisticated or not you should realize that a download problem is not a problem of the SW itself.
It could be either a problem of the browser you used to download Vivaldi or a problem of the server.
In our case likely both of them.
Anyway FYI any server problem should be gone now, so you can test vivaldi w/o involving too much neurons on the download process.

Thank you for your effort.Or, you could assume that your computer is treating Vivaldi differently than it does other browser downloads. Then you can opt to undertake to find out why that is, or not. Your choice.
In my case, and literally millions of others, the computer treats Vivaldi the same way it does any download. It downloads it. It installs it. It runs it. It does so without issue. So - is it that Vivaldi's installer is different from other installers, or is it that your machine is different from millions of others? You may assume anything you like. Our assumptions are decision gates in the software that manages our lives.

I tried again last night and installed Vivaldi, it worked perfectly last night but this morning, it would not open again. I tried uninstalling it and install a standalone version but could not do so because of various errors that I did not understand and could not copy for someone to explain.
-
When it would not start this morning, did you check task manager to see if any of its processes were still live?
