Security fix – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2649.3

(Possible) regression:
Translate text button shows on selected text:
This is of course off:
I notice the shadow-DOM style element gets inserted in the page - it shouldn't when the button is turned off.
However, unable to repro in clean profile.
Tested with extensions turned off as well, still there.
Anyone else?An update on this: After a lot of investigation, I've figured out where the problem is. In this (or last update?) they added a Vivaldi app-specific Service Worker... While investigating Service Worker issues in another topic (I hate SWs), I must've tried Unregister on the Vivaldi SW but didn't think much of it.
Then I noticed the translate button appearing out of nowhere, and did all the troubleshooting I know of (a lot!) without being able to reproduce in a clean profile, before thinking of SWs again. Turns out if you disable this SW, it can cause strange issues like this. And the SW does not return after being unregistered... So you're stuck with this issue and no way to fix it
I was able to fix it only after copying my profile into another install, which seems to have reset the SW registration, then copying the "fixed" profile back
So basically: Do NOT unregister the Vivaldi Service Worker! That's the one located at:
Vivaldi\User Data\Default\Storage\ext\mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli\def
(And I always thoughtStorage\...\def
was used for the default/Guest profile?@SvenDysthe something you know about?
I'll probably make a separate topic with a video showing how to reproduce tomorrow
-
@coplen: New profile seems to be working fine, guys!
-
@pathduck I can confirm this. As I unregistered that SW before updating, the update fixed it.
This SW might be related to the mail client too.Btw, the SW is also present in Stable 5.2.2623.39.

I see someone else hates Service Workers
Or maybe just curious what would happen?Did you see the Translate button appear too?
Btw, the SW is also present in Stable 5.2.2623.39.
Oh yeah, good catch - I never noticed but I don't use Stable except for testing bugs.
I found a probable workaround - delete the "
Secure Preferences
" file. Looks like it fixes the translate button, but also looks like the SW is not "properly" registered after. And it will probably delete some settings doing that as well, I've not dared do that to my regular profile... -

No, but I didn't test. Otoh,
Fast Forward
was broken & after I restarted V (I awkwardly thought a restart might solve the issue ), there was aMail starting
message in the status bar that never disappeared (until I updated). In short, don't unregister that SW unless you're prepared to face strange things happening.
-
@ouzowtf: I have the same problem the last 2 versions. Crashes when loading one of the tabs.

@doctorg Two bug reports for the one bug? Ipso facto, mathematically this annoying bug should get fixed twice as fast. Now if only we can arrange another 40 bug reports for it...

bug is now assigned to a dev, so a fix will be in progress soon
Oh cool. B/R duplication rulz!

My fault. Always my fault.

Oh, um... gulp...
@hlehyaric said in Security fix – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2649.3:

I had that too, last night, after doing the SW stuff i posted about in t'other thread, However, i easily fixed it via that magic trick i discovered & posted about some weeks ago:
-
New Bug?
- Whilst both page zoom "arithmetic" icons still operate correctly, they have obvious graphical malformations.
- Otoh it's no longer possible to manually edit the page zoom figure; clicking on that area fails to convert the field to become editable.
- The previous Snappie did not manifest these issues.
- I reproduced it also in my virgin profile, and also in V in my Arch VM.
Later...
No explicit confirmations yet, but i shall interpret three upvotes as implicit confirmations. Ergo:
VB-88670

Still crashes at startup
So I'd read a few times about crashes on startup for recent snapshots and yesterday it finally happened on one of my laptops as well.
Since I needed Vivaldi for its bookmarks, I needed to get it working again. Renamed the user data folder and it loaded fine, so then just a case of deleting default bookmarks, synchronising, loading up my saved theme and checking for any other minor settings changes.
Quite painless really - and probably a good thing to clear out the profile junk as well...
Edit: this laptop doesn't have mail and feeds though - it would be much more work where I have that running!

oh, I thought throw the laptop/pc out of the window (not to be confused with throw windows off the laptop)

@daring said in Security fix – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2649.3:
- Is it just me, or is "Remove Tab Spacing on Maximized Windows" not working? (same in last snapshot too)
I'm having exactly the same issue on two devices (both Kubuntu 18.04) since the prelast snapshot version.
Then I did some research and found this old bug:
@marko-indaco said in "Remove tab spacing in Maximized Windows" intermittant:Hi folks, i made some try, and I can say that the tab spacing is noted much more if you have the V Menu instead of horizontal menu, that is mine default setting. (The option Remove Tab Spacing in Maximized Windows is ticked)
Now, with snapshot 2649.3 it's exactly like this again.
If you have the V Menu, the tab spacing is noted.
If you have the horizontal menu, there's no tab spacing at all.@DoctorG: Will this be fixed soon?
It's a little bit annoying, 'coz I have a small display and need every pixel line. -
When text is selected, the translate button shows up, although it is disabled in Settings, Webpages:
Show Selected Text Translate Button(VB-88697) Translate Button Shown when Disabled
The button is also transparent.

Hi there. ( amd64 Kubuntu 21.10, just about all flags turned on )
I'm unable to piece together a working URL for the debug-zip. I therefor humbly suggest posting those URL's right beside the release links.
When offered free software I do try to give back by submitting detailed crash reports accompanied by a back trace. But I had the mother of all bad last nights, last night so I do apologize for both the quality of this and the completely ignored crash report instructions.
-
I get a full UI crash every time scroll down with the mouse wheel in both tab and popup
version
of settings while the 'theme' section is active.
If I use the scrollbar instead the crash doesn't occur.
I also get a crash with the mouse wheel if I first used the scrollbar and then the wheel. -
After a right-click on the Vivaldi hamburger-button the menu fails to show until the
browser is restarted. -
Removing your last web panel while it's extended leaves an empty extended web panel
without any web panel icons to retract it with. Another type web-panel-icon works but you
have to click to first extend on top of the skeleton one, making it kind of unnatural-
looking poofing away.
Another click retracts and voilà, your´e finally free. -
The Panel (F4) seems unable to make up it's mind on whether it's a solid or a floater. A
bit vague but I haven't had time to investigate yet. -
When clicking 'pop out to a new window' in Bitwardens extension it creates a new window,
smaller than the parent but equipped with info bar, tab bar and the web panel stripped
down to a single "add web panel" button.
The tab bar also has an "add" button but clicking that creates another window of same type
as the very first window.
I don't know if it's Bitwarden or Vivaldi who's at fault here. I do know though that I
instantly wanted to have options to choose a "load out" when creating a new window.
If I uncheck "show tab bar" now that, as you know, affects all Vivaldi. (I'm not a
developer so I don't know all that can be done with CSS or what have you, I'm just a
hobbyist) -
I would love to be able to substitute the long and vile extension names for a short custom
label. For example it took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that
"chrome-extensionjlkafgslafghglaskflsdfaglakhjgflakhgflskadgfjksagdfasldfksdlghflka"
wasn't any of my extensions but Vivaldi it self. And I think that's it for this episode.
Keep up the good work on this gem of a browser and feel free to reply for any reason at
all. I'm off to bed. Good night.

Is the address bar dropdown limited to 10 entries now? Until a few updates before it was full all the time and now there is almost nothing in it anymore
