[Experimenting] Adding customised thumbnail to the Speed Dial (for now)
-
Hi folks, I recently discovered this browser and what a promising start this is! I'd really love to see more feature added to it in the near future. One thing I would really want to see in the future updates is the ability to change the specific thumbnail for the bookmarks or those in the Speed Dial, because sometimes the screenshot grabbed isn't very decent. After some work-around, here's a glimpse of my Speed Dial page: I have sorted a way to replace the generated screenshots with my own thumbnails. However, sometimes the browser refreshed the thumbnails automatically so that you lose your own ones, in which case I have to re-add the thumbnail again. If you really want to get rid of the generated screenshots and don't mind getting annoyed by regularly modifying some files, here's how I did behind the spoilers:
[ol] [li]The size of the thumbnail on the Speed Dial page is 440px*360px, so go and find the picture you desire and crop it to this dimension. In this example, I made one for the BT Sport website: htt p://i.img ur.com/N8up9KT.png [sub](Please copy-and-paste the link and see my sample thumbnail. I can't squeeze in more screenshots.)[/sub] Note: thumbnails the same ratio but a larger dimension seems working as well, but I'm not sure if this would cause possible laggings.[/li] [li]Bookmark the website you want to add, preferably to the Speed Dial folders. [li]You should close the browser to do this, but it should be fine if you leave it open.[/li] [li]If you followed the default installation path, go to
C:\Users<username>\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\Application<version>\resources\vivaldi
and create a new folder of your choice. In my case, I named mine
custom-thumbs
. Note: "AppData" folder is, by default, hidden. Search Google to see how to show your hidden folders. Another note: Not sure if Windows XP can run this browser, but if that's your case, the path should be
C:\Documents and Settings<username>\Application Data\Local\Vivaldi\Application<version>\resources\vivaldi
[/li] [li]Put your thumbnail in the folder. [li]Now go to
C:\Users<username>\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default
and find the file called "Bookmarks". Open it with a text editor, Notepad is perfectly fine. I used Atom. Note: XP's path:
C:\Documents and Settings<username>\Application Data\Local\Vivaldi\Application<version>\resources\vivaldi
[/li] [li]Search (Ctrl+F) the keyword of the bookmark you want to edit. Check carefully at your search results! You don't want to edit the wrong bookmark. [li]The part highlighted is the portion responsible for our BT Sport bookmark. The line resposible for the thumbnail is
"Thumbnail" : ""
under "meta_info". In most cases, this line can be seen before your bookmark name and its URL (look carefully!), so replace this line with:
"Thumbnail" : "<folder><image.png>"
In our scenario, we replace this line with:
"Thumbnail" : "custom-thumbs\thumb_btsport.png"
If somehow this line doesn't show up, add this before the line with "name":
"meta_info": { "Description": "", "Nickname": "", "Speeddial": "false", "Thumbnail": "" },
then replace the thumbnail location as usual. [/li] [li]Save the file.[/li] [li]Restart the browser.[/li] [li]Tada![/li] [/ol]
Now, some information you might want to look at: [ol] [li]Again, your thumbnails will disappear from time to time because the browser decides to refresh the thumbnails itself from time to time. If so, just re-enter your thumbnail location again. (Step #6-#8 )[/li] [li]If you want to make some icons yourself, Wikipedia is a good place to start your search. I'm open for requests as well! =D[/li] [li]If the thumbnail does not appear, check your thumbnail location in the Bookmarks file; if that doesn't resolve your problem, reply here and I'll see what I can do. [li]I can't comment if this works for Linux or Mac. Probably it would work but I'm afraid you have to figure that out yourself. Sorry.[/li] [/ol] If anything I wrote is misleading or I've missed some crucial points, please comment below so I can improve it. Hope this helps!</image.png></folder></version></username></username></version></username></version></username>
