Why I'll stick with Firefox (for now)
-
2 sticking points for me: 1) Printing as a PDF results in an "image" PDF instead of text. The file size is therefore much larger, and you can't search for text. 2) I really like the configurable Firefox bookmark shortcuts below the search bar. With Vivaldi it appears you have to display bookmarks in a side panel but there is no keyboard shortcut for quickly navigating over to those bookmarks.
-
I don't think there's currently any solution to the PDF problem, but the bookmark shortcut is not a problem.
You can assign any shortcut to focus the bookmarks panel, and you can assign any bookmark folder to the bookmarks bar, just below the address bar.

This issue is shared with the Chrome browser. There is a long Chrome forum topic on the issue but can't locate it sorry. A reason why I don't use Chrome anymore.

Hi Gwen-Dragon, thanks so much for your reply. This is the one sticking point for me switching from Firefox to Vivaldi, so I really hope I can fix it. I followed your instructions, but the PDF is still printed as an image/ non text. I then tried exiting Vivaldi, re-run, ctrl+P but still same PDF content. I'm using 1.0.435.38 x32 | Windows 10x64. I could install the 64 bit version but can't imagine that will make any difference.
When you perform ctrl+P does this print dialog come up for you - ?
-
Gwen-Dragon misunderstood the problem. I don't think there's any way around this other than opening the page in another browser.

Similar issue with Google Chrome since 2014 - extensive discussion and frustration from users can be viewed at https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=409472

I suggest installing a freeware program (like CutePDF, PDFCreator, or the one that comes with Foxit Reader), which you can select and/or make default just like a regular printer.
-
Thanks Kerampf for the suggestion. Yes I already use CutePDF. Have done for 6+ years. But sadly that is not the issue. It is the content of the data passed from the browser to the printer driver that is the issue. The data is passed as an image rather than text. See my link in previous post.

Hi, could you please add a link to a PDF file not working for you?
I use "Open Download Panel" in "Downloads", this opens my main PDF viewer if I hit "Open".
Main system is Linux but can test in Windows 10 VM too.Cheers, mib

Thanks for your interest mib but maybe you miss my point. I can open any "printed" PDF file. If I print a web page to PDF with Firefox (say) which contains text, I can select/ copy that text inside a PDF viewer. If I print a web page to PDF with Vivaldi/ Chrome which contains text, I CANT select/ copy that text inside a PDF viewer because the data passed to the printer driver for creating the PDF is an image. Try it.

I just tried this extension and the text is searchable https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/print-friendly-pdf/ohlencieiipommannpdfcmfdpjjmeolj?hl=en

Yes andrew, I understand, that because I open any PDF directly with my PDF viewer and not in Vivaldi.
PDF viewer extension is disabled and Vivaldi start to download the PDF file, then I use open file.
If you like you can save or print from there, I can even use PDF forms then.Test document PDF

Thanks saudiqbal - do Chrome extensions work in Vivaldi? Amazing if so. I installed the extension you mention in Chrome. It certainly created a PDF with searchable text but it didn't print anything much related to the simple test web page I was viewing. Firefox will "print" a PDF that remains a reasonably accurate copy of the web page, web text will remain as PDF searchable text, and images will remain as PDF images. Maybe there are other extensions like the one you suggest. I'll check, assuming Chrome extensions work in Vivaldi.

Yes, all Chrome extensions should (theoretically) work on Vivaldi. Weird that you haven't tried it from the start, since it's one of the first things I do with any browser - support for external extensions.

Google is still your best friend

NSANE - weird/ theoretically? Why would I expect one companies extensions (with its specific API/ communication methods/ object model) to work with a different companies quite-new-just-out of-beta-browser? There could theoretically be all sorts of incompatibilities. Thanks anyway. At least confirms my question.

Hey The_Solutor - Firefox is currently my best friend - ctrl+P "just works" as expected.

I think Gwen-Dragon gave a fine workaround that you can Ctrl-P then hit the destination [Change…] button to choose the "Save as PDF". The saved PDF file has text and can be searched.
I also like the firefox bookmark shortcut icon. In vivaldi, there does have a keyboard shortcut to bring the bookmark list – Ctrl-B.

If a minor detail like this was enough to prefer a browser over another…
Chromium's engine manages the printing function differently by firefox, period.
This has pros and cons, as everything on this life.

I haven't looked at Vivaldi since April. Thought I'd have another look @ 1.5.658.56. Unfortunately PDFs are still printed (ctrl+P & ctrl+shift+P) as an image, so I'll continue to stay with Firefox. I note Chrome was very close to releasing a public EXE that properly printed PDFs with embedded text but have had issues.
