Open new tab focus
-
I am trying hard to find a way to stop focus automatically going to a new tab. i.e. I frequently right click on link(s) within a web page, and choose to open in a new tab. On all other browsers the focus stays with the page I am linking from, in Vivaldi the focus automatically switches to the new tab. I don't like this at all, to me it's very frustrating. suggestions please.

In Vivaldi, to avoid going to the new tab, you can:
Middle-click the link
Ctrl+click the link.
Right-click and select "Open in Background Tab" from the context menu
Use the mouse gesture down-up over the link. The browser that introduced "open in new tab," Classic Opera, always focused the new tab you opened, as a default. Those of us who used that browser for over a decade expected that behavior. If we wanted to open the new tab in the background, then we selected that option rather than just "open." "Modern" browsers have reversed that behavior (all new tabs open in background, so you have to find them to open them - and it is impossible to open a new tab with immediate focus) and gone one better - they have actually removed the possibility to immediately go to the new tab you open. This has literally pissed me off for years.
I suspect that down the road, Vivaldi will offer an option to open new tab in background as a default. In the meantime, there are at least four ways for a user to do it, so at least you are not totally out of luck.

I thank you so much for such a timely reply.
I think you're phrase "Those of us who used that browser for over a decade expected that behaviour" covers it pretty well, I've used Safari for many years and am used to it's tab behaviour.I have found Vivaldi far superior in virtually all other aspects, it was just this tab behaviour. But, thanks to your suggestions, those irritations may be a thing of the past.
Thanks again. -

Ctrl+click the link.Just a quick correction: You have to Cmd-Click a link to open it in the background. Like using middle-mouse-button-click, that is much, much faster that right-clicking and selecting "Open in Background Tab", especially if you want to open multiple links this way.

Well, yeah. For Mac.
