" History" file too big after months
-
the "History"
file is more than half Giga byte ,
i need to know if i can make it in less size without i loss the history link address .
i see it's non sense that some saved texts in a file can took that too big size , i think that inside that file photos or noon needed stuff , i need only the url link address -
-
@kimoo That is a SQLite database. It does contain more than only URLs, but there are no images or any unneeded data in it.
You can inspect a copy of such file with SQLite Browser -
@kimoo What I noticed is that the file is highly compressible, suggesting that it contains a lot of duplicated data.
My History file is just 5.12 Mbytes ( save my history for session only), but that compresses to 16 Kbytes using 7-Zip.
7-Zip is a valuable tool for backing up all kinds of files, but the file is as big as it needs to be and uncompressed for fast access.

@kimoo
Hi, it depends how long you save the history, I save it for 3 month and it is 15 MB.
500 MB seems really huge.Cheers, mib

SQLite databases are not compressed automatically.
With SQLite3 command line there exists a vacuum command to reduce disk space. -
@mib2berlin yes it's from a year or little more
-
@Pesala i don't want to backup it , i want to reduce it's size while i still using it .
i can't believe that even hundreds of thousands or url can take this size , it's still " text " at anyway ,
this is why i ask about how can i reduce it's size -
@DoctorG still not understand what steps i can do to reduce it's size or delete un-needed content inside it , without i loss the url history

@kimoo download as suggested the Db Browser for Sqlite and install it
exit Vivaldi
copy the History file as History.bak and History.db3
open History.db3 in db browser
menu Tools, Compact Database, confirm on "main"
Exit db browser
rename the History.db3 to History.
Relaunch Vivaldi and check, when everything is verified to be there, you can get rid of the .bak or zip&store it awayMy History.db3 for example shrunk from 4224 Kb to 2828 Kb. (I limit the history to 3 months)
I also suggest to limit your history to one year or less, I want to believe you don't need such long history, as if one site url is really needed to be remembered, bookmarks/speed dial are a better place for it. -
@pafflick wow , how could yours be 27 mg only for 3 years while main is more than half Giga ?
in your V setting , How long you save your history ? 1 or 2 or 3 months ? -
@kimoo without any guarantee of dataloss
- Copy
History
file to a place of your desire f.ex.T:\Vivaldi-Files-Convert\
- [Download from SQLite website] the (https://sqlite.org/download.html) sqlite-tools-win32-x86-......zip
- Unzip f.ex. to folder
T:\SQLite\
- Open command line app (cmd.exe)
- Switch to folder of T:\Vivaldi-Files-Convert\ by command:
cd /D T:\Vivaldi-Files-Convert\
- Start sqlite tool for compression of file with this command:
T:\SQLite\sqlite .\History "VACUUM"
Now the file is smaller.
- Copy
-
@kimoo It's set to "One Year", I just realized. I've changed it to "Forever" and we'll see how it goes.
-
@pafflick i set it " forever " but i use V from only one year or little more
-
@DoctorG @iAN-CooG @mib2berlin @pafflick @Pesala
it will be more wonderful if Vivaldi team made a small ready easy use tool for this issue

@kimoo IThe tool does remove unneded data of database.
But it does not reduce the database content only to data that you want. That can not be implemented for Vivaldi.
If you are anxious to lose data, do not modifiy with tools or delete any files of your browser data.

I've never cleaned my history and have it set to forever. So it goes back to about April 2018 (I used Vivaldi since the first tech preview, but that was on Windows, 2018 is probably around when I switched Linux). So, I'd probably have one of the larger history files. My history file is 387.6MB.
