Search not working properly & emails sent to self are very strange
-
Hm. Can't reproduce that problem here. All of my fetched/downloaded emails are found on search.
-
@ayespy If you look at the animated gifs I sent: I believe at least part of the problem is related to emails that I sent to myself, so they appear both in some SENT and INBOX (typical things I did over the years to test stuff with test strings... like 'shrubbery' and 'bourbon' that I don't otherwise receive in emails)
All mails that do not show up in searches where they should are listed in at least two imap folders. I suspected deduplication before
-
@gmg @Ayespy OK I got it, 4 bug reports from the past can be linked to this one which is finally reproducible: VB-79700 with video attached
Steps to reproduce:
- Have a fresh IMAP email account with 0 emails in any IMAP folder
- Start with a fresh profile
- Enable Mail client in vivaldi://experiments, restart
- Set up the email account in M3, set to prefetch all messages (or not, doesn't matter)
- check that there are 0 emails
- send an email from this email account to this same email account
- Receive the email you just to yourself
- the received email shows in unread and the IMAP INBOX, but not in Received VB-74552
- Deleting the email has very funky effects VB-75873
- Search for a word in the body doesn't work properly (this is not entirely reproducible, might need some attempts) VB-75874
- The total number of messages calculated from number of sent items plus number in inbox = account total etc. doesn't add up VB-79663
I suspect the deduplication algorithm
The video attached to the bug report shows all the above mentioned effects above.
EDIT: oh and I found a new one ... "mark as read button does not appear in unread view". Shown in the video. Not sure I can actually reproduce that one.

@wildente restoring from disk through local accounts is next on the list. We're currently able to import from M2, but not from other clients yet.
But if you didn't delete all the local files (Mail files) then it should just reuse those and doesn't need to download the body again after deleting the db (re-indexing).
-
@gmg thanks - I got all the mails I need, import from M2 is certainly more important for most people at this point.
My main pain comes from VB-79700 (Mails sent to self causes problems) which I recommend gets solved before leaving the experimental stage.
Also thanks for giving updates here in the forum - much appreciated.

Search function for me just stopped working, it returns no results. On Vivaldi 4.0, not on the Snapshot. @Ayespy suggests to "re-index your mail store". How does one do that? Removing and readding my accounts? I just did that a few days ago to get sending to work! (that was https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/62556/emails-are-not-sent )
-
@felagund No, not removing and re-adding accounts.
Simply close Vivaldi and delete or rename (gawd, I hope I'm getting this right - I've only ever had to do it once) C:\Users(YOU)\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default\Storage\ext\mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli

@wildente I have problems with email search as well. I won't go into detail here except to say that search is missing some items & including some items that seem irrelevant to the criteria. But for the moment, let me ask a question.
If I was to focus on [All Messages] and go to search bar to find an email somewhere in one of my email accounts, what criteria would I enter? A word in the subject line, words from the body, an email name, an email address? I repeated that focused on the email account in which I knew the message existed; In all cases I got zip, zilch, nada as a return. I'm very willing to stipulate that I may be doing something wrong or understand but what?
What data is that Search function searching? From reading in some Vivaldi article, it's supposed to be just about everything.... but I don't see evidence of that. Any thoughts, suggestions, settings?
-
@janrif Here is some info on the search functionality - if you use the search field it should find strings in header and body. https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/62501/folder-hierarchy-fails-to-reflect-structure-on-server/12?_=1624029656627
Search should find everything, it did so in M2, and if it has some issues now those will (should/must?) be fixed before we leave beta.
I think there is still some bug(s) in search and indexing. Bug VB-79700 "Mails sent to self makes many things erratic" makes it really hard for me to do proper testing on the search part, like that "whiskey bourbon" example above that I have bugged as VB-75874. I just never know whether the oddity I am looking at is due to VB-79700 or something I should look into more.
I asked for the status of VB-79700 a while ago, it was not assigned at that point, so I patiently wait.

@ayespy said in Search not working properly & emails sent to self are very strange:
you may need to re-index your mail store.
Steps to re-index email "store" ?

@gmg said in Source Filter | Error:
The db is here
Storage/ext/mpognobbkildjkofajifpdfhcoklimli/def/IndexedDB/
If deleted the client will fetch headers again and re-index (as your account will still be set up)
This was also mentioned in this post- Close Vivaldi
- Backup IndexDB
- Delete IndexDB
- Start Vivaldi
BUT
If you use also POP3 accounts, the content of the POP3 accounts won't be shown anymore.
At this point I gave up. -
@mottenmouse maybe this is for Linux? I just browsed all the obvious areas on my drive where this could be located, but found nothing to match. I'm on Windows... I know, I know....

@artpoetryfiction Please have a look in your Profile Path (vivaldi://about/).There you will find the above path.
-
@artpoetryfiction The "Storage" folder is in your User Data/Default folder, along with all the rest of your profile.
-
@mottenmouse OK. I deleted IndexedDB folder after backing up and relaunched Vivaldi. Vivaldi has NOT recreated the folder at the specified location, and is continuing to exhibit the same incomplete search results. Uhm, wtf?
-
@artpoetryfiction That strikes me as impossible. Vivaldi always re-creates the folder. If there is even one active email account, that folder cannot be absent. Without it, you have no mail list. You have a list of emails, yes?
-
After an unknown period of time the IndexedDB folder HAS recreated itself, unfortunately, the new index appears to be no better than the old. Still not showing all emails with a simple search. So rebuilding the index solved nothing. Search is still not functioning!

@wildente said in Search not working properly & emails sent to self are very strange:
Email sent from someone else (not an own account). Subject "bourbon", body "whiskey".
--> email shows in unread & received but searching in Received will find the email when searching for "bourbon" but not when searching for "whiskey". I copied the word from the email bodyIn searching, does user need "" ? Is this only for a body: search? Adding a comma between criteria means what... "and" or "or" "including"? in Vivaldiland. And finally, does search handle asteriks as in *.gmail.com to retrieve all Gmail.... yikes!
