Advanced Download Management Options
-
There are a few older chrome extensions that enhance user control of downloads, and on windows, there are some fairly old, unpolished programs that allow users to set up folder monitoring rules. Generally though, it’s often easiest to write your own powershell script for this kind of thing. But there’s really no reason these options can’t be integrated into Vivaldi.
Vivaldi should have, firstly, a simple/quick setup along the lines of “Keep my Downloads Folder Organized”. Users would set a root downloads directory, and select basic categories of file types for automatic organization. Images. Documents. Videos. Music. Downloaded files would simply be auto-routed to the appropriate subdirectory. A few other basic options could be included, to, for example, automatically delete files after a certain period of time.
For advanced users though, they should be able to define their own custom rules. Based on file extension, the domain/host a file is downloaded from, the text in the file name, etc.
They should not only be able to combine these conditions and specify a target directory in each rule, but beyond that, they should be able to select other actions to automatically preform for downloaded files matching the defined conditions.
Save all .pdf files from archive.org in directory/x, AND open the file upon completion in your computers default pdf software.
Unzip .zip files on completion of download to a new sub directory in location/x. Delete the original .zip file. Open the subdirectory in file explorer.
Rename all image files downloaded from a specified domain according to a regular expression.
Copy the image from a downloaded .jpg file to the clipboard.
Rename downloaded files automatically to delete or replace certain characters. For example, replace spaces in a file name with dashes.
Convert certain file types automatically to one or multiple designated formats, and organize those inti multiple target subdirectories. For example, convert a downloaded markdown file to a html file and a json file, and save each in individually specified subdirectories.
