Accessing a very old mail server
-
My main mail account is in a very old server. I just upgraded to Vivaldi 4 on Linux and tried to add my server. This fails with
ERR_SSL_OBSOLETE_VERSION. My email ISP is not going to upgrade their service, so is there any way around this? -
@josephj11 You can’t switch email providers?
I don’t think you’d want to ignore obsolete SSL.
In fact, sites are now supposed to use TLS. -
@code3 Not easily. I've been using this one for decades and I get everything there. It does use TLS 1.1, but now chromium wants 1.2.
It's really hard to find an email provider that respects privacy and supports Thunderbird. I am hoping to get Vivaldi mail working as a replacement, possibly along with Proton, once I learn how to get all my many folders/filters working on both.
I want to have offline access to my emails for backup and searching.

@josephj11 Okay, maybe you can start to think more about using Vivaldi or Proton. Proton has better encryption but also doesn't follow IMAP protocol, it requires some kind of paid-for program that imitates and IMAP server.
-
@josephj11 if you trust Vivaldi regarding privacy, why not using vivaldi.net for your email. Works with TB.
Vivaldi also recommend Fastmail https://vivaldi.com/blog/privacy-alternatives-to-gmail-fastmail/

@wildente I will seriously consider that.
-
@code3 Yeah. I've been trying to get that thing to work for quite awhile (Proton Thunderbird mail bridge). I'm currently reaching out to them for support.
