Google might breathe new life into RSS adoption
-
Interesting... just when I was wondering if feeds were a dying standard, Google seems to be planning RSS implementation in Chrome for Android!
https://blog.chromium.org/2021/05/an-experiment-in-helping-users-and-web.html
Particularly salient quote: "Keeping a siteโs RSS up-to-date will ensure Chrome can provide the latest content to users with this experiment. We will provide more guidance to web publishers as we learn and evaluate whether this feature will graduate from an experiment to a broader rollout in Chrome."

@mossman said in Google might breathe new life into RSS adoption:
We will provide more guidance to web publishers
Next they'll say RSS was their invention... to rewrite history.
-
@mossman They call it "Chrome Follow," so instead of saying "Sub. to my RSS" sites will say "Follow me on Chrome," which will make users think they NEED to use Chrome...
Still, it could encourage more sites to provide RSS.

@code3 , Vivaldi itself
-
@catweazle Not really sure what your point is... I think we all know that Vivaldi can read feeds already - I thought it was interesting that Google itself seems to be considering doing it as well.

@mossman , that Big Tech boasts new achievements, that a small company has already had for some time.
I think that Chrome had many more relevant functions, when Google would focus more on the needs of the user, than on the commercial interest itself and on the user only as merchandise.
Can you imagine Vivaldi with the resources that Google has at his disposal? -
