Vivaldi Crypto Wallet

I feel that Vivaldi will fit right with the crypto community... Rebels by nature...
Maybe Crypto Wallet feature might be a good step.//MODEDIT: edited to add Vivaldi's official position on crypto: Why Vivaldi will never create ThinkCoin

I couldn't agree more

When Maxthon added its own tokens and crypto wallet, it was the beginning of the end. Most of the problems that Brave users write about are related to the Uphold wallet. And almost nobody remember that Opera has build-in wallet. So...

Nothing more unique than being like the rest.

It seems like a good idea to me that Vivaldi could integrate its own tokeneconomy proposal into its browser as other browser projects are already doing. It is not a matter of copying them as some may think, but of making its own proposal adapted to the Vivaldi project.
Vivaldi could get its own funding if it integrates tokeneconomics, a way to get revenue to keep sustaining itself in the future with the growing support of its community and possible future users.
The browser has it. The trust is there. The track record backs it up. A niche community and market has already been built and is still in that process. It has it all.

The time is ripe for some smart programmers to invent a crypto-currency that does not consume vast quantities of energy.
When people spend all day on line watching video, playing games, and burning large amounts of power on servers providing the content, they cannot shout too loud about wasteful power consumption. I suspect that crypto-currency burns a lot of power, it does have real value for making transactions.
There is already a utility company in the UK that offers its customers free energy at certain times of the day if they have an EV. In the future, such excess supply from renewable sources like solar and wind will only increase.

Adding crypto to Vivaldi would be the worst idea and I would not hesitate to go back to Firefox if they were to go in that direction. The ecological and economical ramifications notwithstanding, cryptocurrency should be entirely opt-in AKA if you really want to use crypto in Vivaldi, you will install the necessary extensions yourself. Integrating it directly into the browser would be a terrible idea and would only bloat it with a feature that only a select people will use.

@amkitakk Hi, cryptocurrency has two main consensus mechanisms: proof of work and proof of stake. Only proof of work wasted energy. Proof of stake is getting quite common, while Bitcoin is popular it is not the only or the best option.
On the other hand, I don’t quite see what benefit this would bring to the browser.
-
I support this:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/60844/suggested-business-model-vivaldi-as-a-subscription-brokerThe reason I’m not sure about the request here is its not clear what benefit it would bring. Do you mean like metamask built into the browser? Wouldn’t that be better off as a web standard? Or how about use a blockchain that already integrates with web standards. I feel like asking for a crypto wallet is like asking for a way to venmo built in: too niche, too specific, and should already be accessible in a website.

Why? Vivaldi is a browser, not a bank or a shop. You want to bank on Vivaldi, go to a bank's website (including a crypto-currency bank). You want to shop on Vivaldi, go to an online shop (including one that will take crypto-currency).
But then again, I don't even know what a "Crypto Wallet" is. So maybe there's something I'm missing here. What's a Crypto Wallet? And what's the point of having one in in the browser, rather then just handling banking and shopping on banking and shopping websites?
-
@amkitakk If that's the way you feel, why do you use Vivaldi in the first place? Vivaldi (and before Vivaldi, Opera) is already "bloated with features that only select people will use". That's the point! The features are built-in, so you don't to install a bunch of extensions. And if you don't want to use a feature, just don't use it.

Other browsers have gained ground by offering their rewards.
Are you talking about the Brave and Edge reward programs?

A crypto wallet holds your private cryptocurrency keys. Because cryptocurrency is more complex and secure than a bank, it is not so simple to just make it “run with JavaScript”. Only one blockchain I know of has managed to do this, and it is truly an impressive project: https://Nimiq.com. The project also optionally integrates with Bitcoin.
Any other blockchain would require a native app or extension to use. So, I kind of see the point in this. But, maybe a JavaScript blockchain (could the W3C add new standards to make this easier to accomplish?) is the future.
You can visit hub.nimiq.com and send cryptocurrency. Any other blockchain would require a native app and/or browser extension.
You are right, Vivaldi has lots of features, this isn’t completely out of scope especially if they made a mail client.
-
@code3 So a cryptocurrency wallet would actually be a good worthwhile feature, for people who do their online shopping with cryptocurrency.
-
@eggcorn Yeah, and make it easier for more people to use cryptocurrency. But it would need to be done in a way that people will actually use it.

Money corrupts; bitcoin corrupts absolutely.
Disregarding all of bitcoin's shortcomings, a financial instrument that brings out the worst in people—greed—won't change the world for the better.
https://www.cynicusrex.com/file/cryptocultscience.htmlAside from the energy waste, crypto“currencies” are the most sophisticated pyramid Ponzi schemes ever. It's so obvious that they're hiding in plain sight.
And why it's so hard for people to distinguish is because of the following:
“Writing about bitcoin for a lay audience is challenging. If people know enough about tech alone they might think there's no problem, if they know enough about finance alone they might think there's no problem. If people know enough about both then they know it's all a big scam.” —https://twitter.com/smdiehl/status/1363898199010852869

I think we should discuss Vivaldi having a cryptocurrency wallet, separately from … well, the original post said:

Maybe Crypto Wallet feature might be a good step. So, separately from whatever this "crypto community" is, and whatever steps Vivaldi would have to take to be part of it.
