just discovered vivaldi today!

i used opera back in the late 90s, then moved around to different browsers such as firefox, konqueror, conqueror(!), chrome, chromium, etc etc!
i've not seen anything as brilliant as vivaldi and have spent all day setting things up on my mobile devices too!
looking forward to examining the various help guides.
such a nicely organized setup!
thx!!

Heehee, welcome -- lovely enthusiasm; probably we all recall our own "oh wow" discovery days, way back when.
why thx gg!
Re your words i've quoted [+ others], i'm curious:
- The "too" implies that you've also put V on one or more pooters, not only mobiles. If so, what OS platform/s?
i use archlinux on all my machines and android on the mobiles.
- How did you discover V?
archlinux put out the notice that google was going to block all chromium browsers (except chrome) starting mar15.
i'd heard this was in the pipeline earlier, but didn't bother thinking about it.so today i thought about it.
i found chromium to be pretty good, but rather clumsy to use. also, seeking help from google just isn't what it used to be. i also didn't want to switch back to chrome having tried that a few years ago.
so i started looking and after going through the big ones such as firefox (which is very nice of course), konqueror (ok for the most part but i didn't want to change my desktop from gnome to kde), opera (tempting), small ones like midori, netsurf just can't do enough, i finally found vivaldi.
what's interesting was that in the slant.com rankings chromium was 24, while firefox was 9 and vivaldi came in at 10!
but, imho vivaldi offers a lot more than firefox especially it's keyboard shortcuts and config possibilities!!
also, the vivaldi team seems so dynamic! great philosophy too!
firefox, i've heard may also be on the way out as far as support goes, but idk.so half the day went into research and then there was no looking back!!

Given that you're a fellow Archer, i'll guess it's either "Snapshot", or "Both".
another archer! fantastic!
i only did stable, it was what showed up in pacman, so i thought it was a good place to start.how long have you been arching?
i actually rather like gnome and i've tried a lot of the other desktops as well as just plain window managers like dvm, i3 and that thing written in haskell (xmonad? can't remember). with gtile, gnome becomes a desktop as well as offering tiling!

Have you installed Snapshot, Stable, or both?
Given that you're a fellow Archer, i'll guess it's either "Snapshot", or "Both".
Ha, but Stable is the Snapshot now!
@pradagio The Snapshot is in the herecura repo. & since I havenโt talked to you yet, have a โwelcomeโ from me as well

i've not seen anything as brilliant as vivaldi and have spent all day setting things up on my mobile devices too!I also remember my first encounter with Vivaldi, still in the first version, acquiring calluses in the Scroll Finger on the configuration page.
Welcome to our community and enjoy Vivaldi. -
@Catweazle
thx for the welcome! i'll watch out for the callouses!@potmeklecbohdan
much appreciated! i'll follow up on the link for herecura snapshot today!@guigirl
thx for the link!
and the history!
this forum is very advanced! i didn't realize you could setup things like your spoiler!
i like zulip a lot, but this place may even beat that!i did windoze too, but only for 2 yrs.
then a friend showed us slackware!from there it was following my 11 yr old son, as he kept trying out different os. we setup a home webserver as a homeschooling project and that put some stability into our existence, but even there we kept changing os ubuntu, freebsd, netbsd, debian, back to ubuntu (a forum mod got mad because i spelt windoze appropriately), arch, more debian etc etc ... eventually he went to college, so i settled on fedora, but then got bothered by the upgrading process and so went back to arch, then manjaro which never worked as well as arch, so i'm back to arch and will stay here regardless of what the wandering son does!!

It happened the same to me when I knew about Vivaldi browser... one day to get the perfect customization. Since you're spending your internet time on your browser, it must fit your expectations on looks.

this fine guide
ok i've installed snapshot and we'll see how that compares over the next few days!
thx gg and to @potmeklecbohdan as well for the extremely clear instructions!

greetings!
this is an interesting commentary pattern!
there is a joy about this browser vivaldi that i haven't seen (or felt) anywhere else!the only situation, i have found, that is similar is with the programming language clojure.
people who use clojure speak so differently about that language than any other i have worked with!words like joy, delight and even happiness flow from users and (in clojure's case books written about it).
this is very nice to see and the only word i'd add to the list is gratitude towards the creators of vivaldi and clojure. -

Righteo, good. Now there's only one more remaining black mark against your name which we need to work on; that pixie, no, elvish, nope, fairy, uh-uh, gnome thing wot you got masquerading as a DE :face_with_stuck-out_tongue_winking_eye:
ok gg what do you use? what do you recommend to remove the blackmark?
i'm really efficient with my setup and have been for several years, but i'm not at all opposed to trying something else since i'm neither stubborn nor a gnome-it-all.
i3 was what i liked best before gnome because of the tiling, but i found going from tile to float a bit awkward, as well as scripting in i3 lingo ... much prefer (z)sh for configuration as i do now with gnome.
And there was much rejoicing.
that chrome being the eye of sauron will go down as a classic!!

@guigirl said in just discovered vivaldi today!:
No no, i'm only teasing of course ...
oh ok and here i was contemplating a major change ... after all, how can i resist a lotr aficionado who uses such references so creatively!
gnome never used plasma did it? i thought that was only kde, but i don't remember. kde 3.4 was a beauty! after that everything started crashing for me.
i tried openbox, but didn't see the point of using it over dwm or i3. i figured if i was not going to use a tiling manager, i might as well get one that has a lot of goodies. used it on a old laptop many years ago with a minimal linux called crunchbang i think.
the thing is that 20 yrs ago with pentium3 machines the de made a different which is why xfce was popular, but with the faster machines these days, i'm not sure it's noticeable. interestingly enough, some years ago i was very surprised to see that gnome-terminal's benchmarks out did some of the smaller, lighter terminal programs.
anyway, if you ever want to go gnoming, i have a pretty good config (well for me anyway).

Now can i get back to my grocery shopping pl-ease?
of course! i should have realized that since we just got our online groceries done a couple of hours earlier - had to get it ready before midnight or can't pick up on monday!
i see you like computing on the edge!
i will have to learn to do that at some point - my son was like that and every time something broke he was happy to have a chance to fix it. i survived that phase though! -
