Gmail Unable to archive/move mail to All Mail folder
-
When using IMAP, I usually designate my All Mail folder (which is configured to be visible in IMAP) as my "Archive" folder so that I can just move mail there when I no longer need it in my inbox. However, using Vivaldi Mail, my All Mail folder does not show up in the list of custom folders to move mail to. Am I missing something?
And yes, I would love to move off of Gmail, but I have a legacy free G-Suite setup and the wife acceptance factor of moving away from G-Suite is very, very, VERY low.

@jrtolle You gotta subscribe to the “All Mail” folder first. In
vivaldi://settings/mail/
tick “Show unsubscribed mailboxes”, then open the mail panel, expand “All Accounts” and your Gmail address. Then select “All Mail”, which should now be displayed (albeit a little opaque), and subscribe to the folder in the mail tab that opens. -
Unfortunately, I am already subscribed to the All Mail folder. I already have the show unsubscribed folders option checked. When I right click on the All Mail folder, I have the option to unsubscribe. Is there another way to setup an Archive option, or another way to add to the Custom Folders list? I hope that is on the todo list.

@jrtolle did you solve this? i have the same problem

@shemtovo doesn't seem so, same here. All All Mail shows up under all accounts among the other default folders, including starred. There are also the three standard folders "receipts", "work" and "important" which I assume are some Gmail standard because I wholeheartedly believe folders are conceptually plain wrong and never create any, in particular not for receipts.
Using right-click & move only shows those last three folders "receipts", "work" and "important". So I conclude that this has to do with GMail's non standard IMAP implementation, where they added some non-standard folders (All mail & starred) without actually flagging them as such. Or it's a bug
In any case, since the behavior you understandably expect is that these folders should show up in the custom folders, it really doesn't matter whether it is a bug or Gmail's weirdness. So I suggest you write a (fanfare?) worthwhile bug report
Alternatively, you could just stop using this rather inefficient approach of using an all mail folder as an archive, requiring you to move mails around. Just read your email in Unread, and when you are done, mark it as read. So your archive is just all email that is not unread anymore.

I have the same issue. I have accounts in Gmail and Outlook.com and in both cases I have the same workflow, which involves "archiving" messages to get them out of the Inbox. There is still stuff that hangs around in my inbox as reminders of things that need to be done or responded to.
Now, I could replace this workflow using the unseen and unread flow that Vivaldi is pushing me towards (and I actually kinda like the sound of), but...
- I currently have thousands of "unread" (and therefore according to Vivaldi "unseen") messages in my archive.
- I also still have the "reminders" I sitting in my Inbox that are "read".
- This workflow breaks down when I'm on my phone (which has no idea what Vivaldi has "seen").
Besides I thought the whole point of Vivaldi was to do things your own way? Which, you know, for now I'm just not using Vivaldi mail and sticking to my current Gmail/Outlook workflows, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Just want to +1 the request to have a simple "archive" button.
-
I am also curious of a workflow for Gmail users.
I only have a single laptop with Vivaldi, but I will access my email on my Phone, tablet, other computers where I don't have Vivaldi.
This means that I have to accept the way Gmail works, in regards to how it archives emails to remove them from the inbox.
I appreciate that Vivaldi works like a stock standard email client, and that it is Gmail that does not work like a stock client (even though it could have, whilst still offering the same user experience.)
So where Gmail is never going away, I am hoping Vivaldi might offer a way to work the way Gmail works so I can switch more seamlessly between email clients.

@deathau agreed Vivaldi can try to make it easier for people to have the workflow they are used to.
Note that "move to archive" breaks down somewhat when you have more than one email account, as every one of them will have their own folders.Ultimately this is all about "which flag/label should the email carry in order to be considered new or archived".
Understandably you don't want to change that to anything else than "archive". So if Vivaldi would allow to bind a key to an action, then we would be done. In this case you would change the key for "mark as read" (k) to "mark as read and move to archive". But how to make that work when you have more than one account? So you will have to use the move to... folder button in the mail action toolbar, which should show the archive folder
You can rather easily start doing things more Vivaldi like by marking all mails in your archive as read (should work with crtl A and selecting mark as read or hit k)
Since you can identify your reminders without the read/unread state, you can do the same in your inbox, and then filter for your reminders, mark those as unread.
Mobile:
I use BlueMail on the phone which supports to show only unread email and marking as read with an action, but sadly it does not allow me to open an email without automatically removing the unread flag, so if I want to have the mail for later I have to actively set it again. -
@wildente Fair enough.
You could make it an email account option to specify an "archive" or "quick move" folder, as an option.
I could also adjust my flow to 'star' or 'flag' emails instead of leaving them in the inbox, also which would theoretically work cross-platform as I'm not relying on read/unread status or Vivaldi's 'unseen' flag.
...Which is an option I'm considering, but I'm leaning more towards the "stick with my current tools" option for now. -
@deathau I like the idea of a quick move folder definition per account.

I like this also.
But those who want to keep things in sync with Gmail (I believe) it would need to be able to move into "All Mail" and that's not a folder that is listed to be able to move emails to.
-
@cmiles that is maybe currently by design due to Gmail not marking that folder as a custom imap folder, but I suggest you write a bug report that it is missing / it should be there

Thanks for the suggestion. A bug report has been raised.

@cmiles
Hi, can you share the bug number VB-123456?
@pvfpinto1
Hi, if I get the number I can check the status of the report.Cheers, mib
