Friday Poll: How many bookmarks do you have?
-
Better announcing it late than never... In case you haven't seen it already, this week poll is about bookmarks. Also we love your comments and I just realized that I had forgotten to enable them. This is now possible. We hope to link the comments of these posts to the forum down the line. Thanks for being patient with us!
Head to the Poll vivaldi.net/friday-poll-how-many-bookmarks

@Gaëlle Thank you for the good news. Long live the forum!
-
Mainstream +1000. It's amazing how many markers accumulate over the years. Although surely some of them no longer exist, but I am lazy to check all of them.
-
@Catweazle I agree, maybe one day i will clean up.
-
about 500
-
@Folgore101 , I have already thought on several occasions to set aside the bookmarks that I continue to use and delete the rest. Clean slate
-
Unfortunately one thing this poll has shown is that there is actually no easy way for the user to know the exact number of bookmarks in Vivaldi. Unless you go through and add up the numbers for each sub-folder, which would be mind-numbingly tedious.
Unless there's some obvious way I'm completely missing?
Sync Internals show 811... I assume this is because it counts folders as "bookmarks".
Other ways:
AM DeadLink shows 738.
Exporting as HTML:$ grep -i "<a href" bookmarks_13_12_2020.html | wc -l 738
Going directly to the Bookmarks file:
$ grep "url\":" Bookmarks | wc -l 738
Some masochist could probably find a way to do it using
jq
as well -

Next poll: How many dials on Speed Dial do you have? ?
-
@Pathduck I used this (not sure if the
-P
is needed, but…)expr $(grep -Pic '"type": ?"url"' ~/.config/vivaldi-snapshot/Default/Bookmarks) \ - $(grep -Pic 'bookmark.placeholder.url' ~/.config/vivaldi-snapshot/Default/Bookmarks)
(2434, of which 1279 in one folder)
Edit: improved readability
Edit: use-c
. Btw., now I have 2442Edit: finally I’ve got it to perfection (ssh, there’re definitely no unneeded args)
expr $(grep -PicTure '"type": ?"url"' ~/.config/vivaldi-snapshot/Default/Bookmarks) \ - $(grep -PicTure 'bookmark.placeholder.url' ~/.config/vivaldi-snapshot/Default/Bookmarks)
-

@Pathduck I miss Am Deadlink.
Two Unix cm's. Where did you issue them? Windows?$ cat .config/vivaldi/Default/Bookmarks | grep '"url":' | sort -u
Output
"url": "http://www.streppone.it/cosimo/blog/" "url": "http://www.streppone.it/cosimo/blog/tag/surge/" "url": "http://www.subnet-calculator.com/subnet.php?net_class=C"
$ cat .config/vivaldi-snapshot/Default/Bookmarks | grep -c '"url":'

Cygwin works very well on Windows
$ cat .config/vivaldi/Default/Bookmarks | grep '"url":' | sort -u
It's a JSON file, why are you using sort?
$ cat .config/vivaldi-snapshot/Default/Bookmarks | grep -c '"url":'
I always forget about
-c
when grepping, old habit to usewc -l
to count lines instead. We've all got our habits, sometimes we cat and pipe, sometimes just point grep at the file to search -

A script to remove Opera bookmarks description
Place inside ~/.opera and make it executable (chmod a+x)
mv bookmarks.adr bookmarks.adr.bak
awk '!/DESCRIPTION=/' bookmarks.adr.bak > bookmarks.adrsource:http://my.opera.com/Tamil/blog/linux-shell-script-to-remove-opera-bookmarks-description

Grep works with file arguments. But i know, that cat may be a memory from UNIX decades ago.
True. Ruarí call it redundant
