URL sharing via QR code and an update to Chromium 87 – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2110.3
-
@Steffie Yeah i only had this with the previous snapshot and, as i said, it was only sometimes and for a fraction of a second after closing a tab.
When asked for someone to confirm the issue on the past thread some user told me that he had always have dead birds on all versions of vivaldi and not only that specific snapshot, if true then the behavior may vary depending on hardware and/or OS.
Anyway I'm happy to announce that on my specific case it's not happening anymore and as an added bonus some actions related to tab handling now feels more responsive.

It's a nice feature, but another button in the address field. It would be good to have an overflow menu for the page actions just like in Firefox.

@potmeklecbohdan Walking dangerously close to going severely OT there, sunshine!

first discovered V... such joy!
This applies to many of us!
I forgot… QR QR QR
By the way, is there some push for standardisation of QR links or something? I'm suddenly seeing it everywhere this week!
Just this morning, I discovered that my Linux Plasma clipboard had made a QR code link to the network video file I was opening in VLC... With a nice white border separating the code from the black pop-up frame

@Gwen-Dragon I'm with you. Those others are simply so dreadful, ain't they?

@mossman QR code generation is not new for KDE Plasma, https://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2014/07/next-generation-klipper/ , you seem to have discovered it now, which is better late than never nonetheless

QR codes are the future haven't you heard?
Would it be the right time to mention that I was involved in selling pre-smartphone internet-connected phones in early 2000s and at a trade fair helped Japan's NEC demonstrate online purchase from a vending machine using QR-enabled phones...?
Edit: phew, that was a long sentence... Ha ha ha!

@Pathduck It is not fair to blame QR codes for how they are used negatively, I would even say doing so distracts from the real problem.
Namely, powerful people abuse their power. If we didn't have QR codes, I can guarantee those exact same abusers would be using regular 1D barcodes, or NFC tags, or credit cards, or some other totally benign idea used solely in a show of power.

Ha ha ha... Yeah. The thing is they've been totally mis-sold. Where they are actually useful is in passing complicated data quickly which would be a pain to actually type in manually.
Like the NEC demonstration I mentioned - in that case the phone is passing the details of the vending machine, product, price etc. together with phone subscription details and some authentication code to your phone provider who then communicates with the vending company and authorises the transaction to drop the can of Coke into the slot in front of you and put a small charge on your phone bill... all in a few seconds. THAT'S the kind of case where it is more useful than you manually doing it yourself.
Probably still faster and easier than using a chip card, really.

@LonM How do you check a QR code?
Read the hyperlink very carefully
Once you see what the hyperlink is, you need to decide if it is safe. If it is a well-known web site that you recognize, then you can proceed. However, the hyperlink must be read carefully. Malware writers and spammers often use web addresses that contain the names of well-known sites or software.Source https://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-check-internet-link-without-actually-clicking-it.htm

QR codes are not just used for URLs, they can be used for anything.
If they are used for URLs, after scanning one you check the link first before opening it. I.e. you treat it the same way you would a hyperlink. It's just more convenient because you don't have to type it all out by hand.

My phone is not recognizing any of those QR codes generated by Vivaldi.
Edit:
I figured why...dark theme.
The fix would be to make that popup always white or to have a white border.

@mossman said in URL sharing via QR code and an update to Chromium 87 – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2110.3:I'm getting some QR weirdness - although it's not Vivaldi's fault... my phone refuses to read the QR in the pop-up by the address bar for this blog - even though it does read the one in the blog image (shorter URL means less complex code). The really weird thing is that if I copy and paste in GIMP then suddenly it can instantly read it!
The only difference I can see is that the image is displayed maybe 50% larger in GIMP. Perhaps an option to click to enlarge the displayed code might help?
Edit: 30 seconds later and I figured it out! I have a dark theme and it is not detecting the edges of the code block. Changing to a lighter theme fixed it. Strangely, the dark grey background in GIMP was not such an issue.
So; bug: need to add a light border on the rendered QR image.

Let me know if replicable [Windows 10 1909]
Accessing
vivaldi://print
or keeping its tab opened will hang Vivaldi UI but usingchrome://print
is fine. -
@Hadden89 I can't reproduce on Windows 20H2 x64
