Do you remember who told you about Vivaldi? ๐
-
I was very frutrated with new Opera and switched to Chromium. But I still did read news at Habr.ru and Ilya @Shpankov wrote about Vivaldi.
Vivaldi was very alpha and I don't know why I didn't swithed then. But several days ago I installed Vivaldi out of curiosity and falled in love with it in no time. -
Do you remember who...
No, not their name, anymore.
Do you remember where...
Oh yes, with clarity. It was in the Opera Blog such as it was back in the "O"15+ dark dank depressed days. Update after update issued forth, only to leave a growing & vocal cadre of us there ever more frustrated & annoyed at the dire loss of capabilities, but much worse even than that, the growing realisation that "O"15+ would never be "our" browser again, & indeed its aspirations were more & more careening off into a swamp of sorrowful superficiality, a bog of banal blandness.
The blog found so many of us bellyaching & whingeing at the pile of crapitude our beloved browser had become. Then, one day, some kind user there mentioned they'd heard of a new kid on the block, something called Vivaldi. Here's my very first Vivaldi Notes note i wrote myself, in TP1, on 7 Feb 2015:
Vivaldi -- the new old Opera!
7/2/15 00:26: Cool - keep watching for V development... this might become the new old Opera!!!
22/2/15: I have now made Vivaldi my default browser. Even though it remains buggy, crashy, & still lacks much key functionality, it already has enough Pros compared to Chromium & Opera Dev that it is worthwhile taking this step.
31/3/15: Weekly updates have continued & it's just getting better & better. Stability hassles are substantially reduced, & it's just more & more a delight to use. -
Like many others, I think it was in the comments of an Opera release announcement on their website. I used to follow the release announcements for Opera snapshots and betas and read the comments. And many people were disappointed in change in direction of the Chromium-based Opera. Someone posted a link about Vivaldi.
I seem to remember that the community for Vivaldi was first. But I don't think it was confirmed that there was going to be a browser. I think people were speculating that Jon might release a new browser. I want to say that there was the .net domain for the community. And the .com domain existed but it wasn't clear what it would be used for until a bit later. I think some people even went as far as to look up trademark filings to see that a web browser was planned.

Sorry this thread escaped my attention
Like many here said, this is the historic post with 343 upvotes including mine:
If you have a disqus accountyou can read it here:
https://disqus.com/home/discussion/operablogdesktop/opera_27_for_computers_first_stable_release_in_2015/Otherwise the internet archive is probably a good source
P.S.1 The every-day fighting and struggling of those days for just a little browser-sanity is unforgettable...
P.S.2 And a little "prophetic" bonus

@npro Oh wow, how great that you have/found this -- i'm now grinning ear to ear once again at this vivid old memory. Wow was it prophetic or what, teehee!
Haha, i love this one -- a really common sentiment for so many of us back then, spilling-over with frustration as we were, when every release of Opera15+-Developer just got worse & worse, further & further away from "our" browser:

Today I thought it's time to move from Opera 12 to Opera 27. But luckly, Vivaldi was released today. So, goodbye Opera.And...

I'm using it now and then, specially to check on their forums, but I wouldn't exchange my browser just yet. But hey, it's just an alpha release, they're yet testing things, correcting bugs, and above all, hearing what its users have to say - unlike Opera!
It's not the browser of choice right now, but I assure you, once the stable version is released, we'll be seeing Vivaldi as the best browser of its generation! It's already better than Chropera!Yes!

Holykrap. It's already more of what I have been waiting for than any other browser.

@Steffie Sadly I can't give you more upvotes for every lovely quote of that past you post, you would have 8 by now, they are all great . They were such an explosion of accumulated oppressive energy over the whole depressed situation for years you have so wonderfully captured in terms of facts and feelings in your previous post and are indeed a joy to read them anew after all those years

@phanex I sure do. One of my best friends in Oslo. I was very frustrated with FF and told me about Vivaldi. Stein Erik, We met at Escenic the middle of 2000. I listen to him about lots of things. Because of him I went to Linux. Then I had a stroke and everything went kerflooey, but not Vivaldi. It stays with me through thick and thin. I write all my friends about how wonderful Vivaldi is.

News, just I followed the news .
On those times I'd use Opera and I was worried because Opera was purchased by a Chinese company, began to change the course of Opera and I had not viable choices .
I was delighted to hear that one of the founders of Opera was creating a new company to follow the Opera's original philosophy : From the "1st moments" I was with V.
Now I'm a loyal follower with desktop computer, laptop and phone with a only ONE browser installed...beside the TG group, TW and V's forum.

@Gaรซlle I read an article about Jon and his life. And so i searched for Vivaldi. Easy as that.
-
I found it by searching for Chrome alternatives after the news broke that Google would be breaking some adblock extensions.
-
In the past two days i have read three separate tech online magazine articles by so-called tech journalists [SCTJ], hailing the new Edge browser vertical tabs innovation. My blood temperature approached boiling point with each article. None of these SCTJ gave any historical or contemporary context at all, ie, saying not a peep about legacy Opera nor current Vivaldi. Any clueless reader would conclude from these useless articles that MS are innovators & Edge is leading the pack with "unique" features like vertical tabs.
I mention my moan here simply to make this point -- Vivaldi PR somehow needs to expand much more to eliminate awareness-vacuums existing amongst lazy or maybe bought SCTJ. Someone needs to tell them about Vivaldi.
-
@Steffie In French, we have a word for that kind of articles you are referring to: publireportage (publicitรฉ+reportage = advertisement+article). It means an article is sponsored content, an advertisement written by a journalist.

My dad told me about Opera, a long time ago. And I was very happy with Opera! Used it for over a decade. But eventuality, support was drooped for Opera (the old Opera, not the new Chromium Opera). There were no more security updates. So I reluctantly switched to Chrome.
But soon after switching to Chrome, I discovered Vivaldi (I think) from an article. Then I told my dad about Vivaldi. And I'm very happy with Vivaldi, for the same reason I was very happy with the old Opera.
-
@Eggcorn Is your dad now also using V ?
-
@Steffie Yes. But he's not as happy with Vivaldi as I am, for the same reason he wasn't as happy with the old Opera as I was: A lot more bugs then he would like!
Mind you, he pushes his software a lot further then most people do. So he runs into bugs more then most people do. Also, some of the bugs and problems are from the system, and not from Vivaldi itself.
-

Maybe you could encourage him also joining the forum, & reporting his problems?

Well then, no disrespect intended to your dad, but it's quite unfair to blame V for non-V problems.
-
Nah, he's not being unfair. He's not the type to scapegoat, to knowingly blame problems caused by something else on Vivaldi. I'm just saying that problems with the system, are part of what gets in the way when he uses Vivaldi.

Sounds like he'd fit in here nicely
