On the latest snapshot 1.0.118.2 (Developer Build), you can install Chrome extensions.

It's been introduced in the previous build, I believe. And technically, you could install them from the very first preview, it was just a bit harder to do.

I just found out about it and I wanted to share it with those who might not know it yet.

the only chrome extension that work are those that don't need the extension bar. Hopefully Vivaldi open up extension soon

Here is a Lifehack for your Vivaldi:
-Go to Speed Dial, create a new Speed Dial folder, call it "Settings Pages"
-Copy paste the following into a tab:
–vivaldi://flags
--vivaldi://plugins
--vivaldi://chrome/extensions
-Add each to Settings Pages -

For me here is the crucial thing about any extensions:
They must be independent just for Vivaldi rather than Chrome! What do I mean? Like Opera and Yandex which seems to use Opera extensions. Why? So we do not run into censorship issues from Chrome! Notice how you cannot download a media scanner which downloads from Youtube and that is a perfect example of censorship not to mention how Chrome locks the browser down from external injection of extensions from third-party websites. We want freedom not censorship and DRM ball and chains! Make note VIvaldi because Opera and Yandex have it perfectly right. I've seen some nice Chromium based browsers I would have used but dumped them because of the censorship, Slipneir and others are all the same they all use Chrome's lame store and lets not forget how you are forced to sign up to big brother NSA Chrome in order to install some extensions. No thanks!

I think for mainstream addons (like Ghostery or Adblock) we're fine relying on Chrome's store, as long as Chrome allows them. But opening a native Vivaldi Extension Shop to host addons designed expressly for Vivaldi would definitely be a good idea. If we could find a way to hook into Firefox's addons as well, that would be stupendous. This allows us to maximize our potential value to new users by showing that they have nothing to lose re: addons by coming to Vivaldi.

Am I the only one for whom vivaldi instantly crashes on trying to install extensions from chrome store? Not even regular adblock works: no error message, just vivaldi is gone a few secs after clicking the "Add to Chrome" button.
Edit: Oh, I'm on mac os x, maybe it only works for windows so far?

Everyone on Mac is reporting the same thing. Windows, so far, not having the problem.

My Windows7/x64 Vivaldi 1.0.162.9 did not install extensions from Chrome Web Store. I just saw a button kind of 'Available in crome' instead of 'Add to Chrome'. Click on that button showed me only chrome download page. The thing worked only after I manually created folder Extensions in vivaldi's home folder and restarted vivaldi. I was about to write here that extensions do not work at all with 'Windows7/x64 Vivaldi 1.0.162.9', but I just got lucky suddenly. It's definitely something wrong with vivaldi extensions yet. And what I've done looks like a dirty magic. It would be nice of vivaldi team to check whether they have any open or closed defects(bugs) on this topic in their bugtracker. Thank you.

You sir, are a life life saver. I had this exact problem, and manually adding the folder worked. Thanks.

I looked and looked for the solution and finally resolved it by manually installing the "Download Chrome Extension" add-on from Opera add-ons page. Wish I'd found this post earlier

The last thing we want is Chrome extensions one because extensions hinder browsers but two Google is a censorship tyrant. Instead I propose Vivaldi utilizes Opera extensions just like Yandex.
