Take a break – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 2020.3
-
I want Vivaldi to startup or create a new tab/window with a Blank Page instead of HomePage or Start Page. Which is possible by selecting appropriately at "General->STARTUP->Startup with" and at "Tabs->TABS->New Tab Page". But the current snapshot annoyingly inserts an "about://blank" text at the address bar, which needs to be manually deleted every time.
Please fix. -

Of course it did -- you presumably have the luxury of not facing the nefarious
southernhemisphereblocker
flag that the Devs snuck into the last TWO Snapshots.I'm now becoming quite worried about the next Stable, if the Devs have not fixed this terrible fault in these two+ Snapshots by then, & it then rolls into Stable, then all V's will be DoA for me, leaving me no choice but to indefinitely use obsolete versions, or change to FF-Nightly.
EDIT, 2 hrs later.
After more testing, it's still a 100% failure-to-launch rate here, all with that identical error messageTrace/breakpoint trap
. As also for the previous Snapshot, my tests spanned 2 physical PCs [Tower & Laptop], one secondary-boot OS on Tower, & some VMs on Tower.Today's distros tested: Arch, ArchLabs, SparkyLinux, SolydK.. ie, two archies, 2 debians.
Oh, also, today's Arch updates included the much awaited Chromium [browser] jump from 84 to 85. It launched just fine... ergo, it is not specifically C85 that has broken my latest two Snapshots.
Bwaaaaaaaaaaaah.
Oh yes, & also same as with the last Snapshot:- Two of these distros have never had a working V-Snapshot on them before, ie, atm [coz last & current SS fail to launch] the
~/.config/vivaldi-snapshot
directory is completely empty, ie, no Default profile yet exists, ie, anyone who asks me if i remembered to test with a clean profile is missing the point. Eg, Lappy:
steffie@xpsl501x[~/.config/vivaldi-snapshot] 13:28:03 Wed Aug 26 $> ls -m steffie@xpsl501x[~/.config/vivaldi-snapshot] 13:28:12 Wed Aug 26 $> ls steffie@xpsl501x[~/.config/vivaldi-snapshot] 13:28:15 Wed Aug 26 $> ls -h steffie@xpsl501x[~/.config/vivaldi-snapshot] 13:28:30 Wed Aug 26 $> ls -ah . .. steffie@xpsl501x[~/.config/vivaldi-snapshot] 13:28:36 Wed Aug 26 $>
- The Arch VM uses
herecura
. - The ArchLabs VM uses AUR.
- The debians [Tower's 2nd-boot], Lappy's sole boot] obviously use entirely different packages to the archies.
Hence, same as i concluded in my testing of the previous borked Snapshot too, other than the fact that i live south of the equator i cannot find any commonalities across all my tests to indicate this is my fault, rather than an actually bad current & previous Snapshot.

Same question.
May devs give answer? For example, it happens with https://github.com :

I like the Break feature.
One enhancement to the Break feature would be to change the title of the active tab (or even all the tabs). Because, while the tabs themselves are blanked out, the tab title is still displayed by the operating system in the window list.
So, if your boss walks in on you goofing off at work, the web page will be blank but the page title could still be read because it is displayed by the operating system.
Similarly, the page title would be listed when alt-tabbing.
And the page titles are also shown in Vivaldi's Tab Cycler (I have the option set as a list). Although, if someone else has access to your browser to cycle the tabs to read the page titles, they could probably just as easily end the break mode.

If that is your concern, windows+L and lock your PC, best boss key. But seriously, you shouldn't be "goofing off" while at work, and if you do, do it smart with a private window that can be immediately closed, leaving the main window with only "legit" tabs

I was just giving the work scenario as a relatable example.
Besides, as with a lot of people, I'm working from home right now. So there is no boss to worry about walking in, and all of my time is spent goofing off.

@Steffie : same here on RHEL 7.4. Second snapshot build that immediately crashes on startup. What a mess!

@drv42: It was set to "Cannot reproduce"

Talking of pause mode and boss key, I must admit that I don't see much point in just making the Vivaldi window blank... But I would see a use in stopping all activity and taking the window off the screen.
I can imagine a case for myself where I know there's action going on in the background (music playing, some kind of interaction on a webpage) which I would also like to halt while I do something else - otherwise I would just minimise the window.
So for those times, and where multiple windows are open (requiring multiple clicks to minimise them all), a single-click way to hibernate everything Vivaldi is doing and reduce it to a taskbar icon would be the only time I would want this option.

@Pesala Worse: The UI is still active in break mode!
- Click where the tab bar was before it was obscured and you see the X on a tab. if you click it, the tab will be closed despite break mode is still on.
- Click 100 times on the (+) in the tab bar and you will be surprised how narrow tabs can get when you are leaving the break mode.
- The same happens with the page navigation buttons, they stay active.
- Open the notes panel and select a note, start break mode and click on the minus (-) at the top - the note will be in trash.
- The same happens with the other panels.
Reported as: VB-71039 - [Break Mode] It should not be possible to interact with other UI elements
-
@QuHno All are non-issues IMO. Why would anyone even try to do any of those things in break mode? They just chat with their family or colleagues and then turn off break mode and get back to work.
-
@vort: It's also on speed dial, Vivaldi needs to wrap things out and get ready for 85 it's already out.
-
@Pesala or they leave for a short visit to the restrooms and a workmate clicks on it in several places ...
Apart from that: Minimize to tray and stopping all websites and video/audio playback would have been nicer.
-
something odd with settings ??
if i open settings from taskbar icon i get this - note the url
if i open it from the drop down menu - again note the url
when opening it from the taskbar icon the expected page flashes up for a split second and then changes
cannot say for sure if it started with this snapshot but i think it did

nah you 'll be fine, once they release the stable source code as they do we can find that damn zygote entry, alter it (yeah right ) and compile Vivaldi from scratch

@npro Perhaps i'm being just a teensy tad too cynical by surmising that you might be quite enjoying my abject misery safe from your lofty vantage point ...

@steffie: Can also confirm that for some Solus users, both this vivaldi snapshot and the previous fail to launch with the same issue you're reporting. While it launches on my systems (laptop is an AMD Ryzen 5 2500U with Radeon GFX, desktop is a Ryzen 7 1700 w/ a NVIDIA GTK 1070Ti using proprietary drivers), it fails to launch under a 3900X w/ a GTX 1060. It's not desktop specific either, as it works for me under Budgie and GNOME, while the tester reports it not launching on Budgie or Plasma (so not related to anything in that particular stack). This crash is happening with existing and brand new profiles.
Funny enough, they also live south of the equator in Australia, whereas I do not So you may be on to something there! Kidding aside, it doesn't seem to be your fault.

Conclusive proof: V Devs are blatant hemisphericists! It's scandalous.
