for an average user
That's infact not the target audience for Vivaldi. For them there is chrome.

@Davy49 With Vivaldi you can be as much technical as you want, that's the big difference to other browsers of publicly traded companies (like Chinopera to give an example), where features can come and go in an instant according to their telemetry data (spying on you) and how much profit they bring or have (not) brought in order to please their investors, leaving you who were using that feature in the cold. Vivaldi's philosophy is putting the user's needs (from basic usage to advanced) in the front after all, contrary to the other basic browsers who... know better your needs and can-do than you do. And related to the latter is also this Linux saying, paraphrased: "Other browsers believe all users are idiots, Vivaldi demands proof! "

Ta. Fwiw...
I used to run uBlockOrigin for many years, but a few years back i changed from uBO to her big sister uMatrix. IMO uBO is great but uM is even better... with one glaring [apparent] exception. uBO provides an explicit setting to block WebRTC, whereas to my constant astonishment* uM does not.
Hence, afaik, your sensible comment would accurately explain my experience of this Vivaldi-Snapshot setting annoyingly auto-reenabling with updates IF i had uBO, but given i instead have uM i continue to interpret this as a persistent Vivaldi-Snapshot bug.
* I am always so surprised by this apparent gaping omission in uM's otherwise impressive capabilities that each few years i do a new online search to see if any improvement has occurred. In preparing this reply to you today i did another such search, which as usual has given me no resolution, but only once more revealed this exasperating & IMO quite poor reaction from the uBO/uM Dev to send legitimate user queries into a continuous loop without actually answering the question:

has anyone else noticed how much the so called browser war is heating up quite a bit
Wait, what... you mean, there are other browsers?

For some reason, since updating the browser, the active Vivaldi window crashes whenever the Speed Dial is loaded - I am left with a grey screen in that window. Other windows stay as normal as long as I don't view the Speed Dial in them too. I originally thought the issue was related to opening new tabs, however the browser didn't crash if I opened a tab another way (bookmark, any option in the "Help" menu...), and also disappeared when I changed my New Tab setting to "Blank Page".

Seems like what happened to me, are you using VivaldiHooks or any other mod that modifies the speedial?

https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/49565/whole-page-blocking-support-vivaldi-browser-snapshot-2001-3/18?page=1BINGO! You hit the nail on the head - I was using VivaldiHooks; and disabling all the hooks related to Speed Dial and restarting the browser solved the issue.

Auto update was a bit to silent to this build not prompt about the restart to update (from previous snapshot)
macOS@ruarí Last time I saw snapshots on the weekend was back in the old Opera Next days

@Steffie As far as I can remember gorhill stopped using µMatrix years ago. Therefore support is rudimentary, don’t think much work goes into it anymore.
-
@luetage OMZ, i had no idea of that -- tbh i'm shocked, & now feel really naive. Looks like maybe i need to plan a journey from uM back to uBO, & learn it all over again. Initially uBO felt comfy & uM scary, but now it's quite the other way around. Many thanks.
EDIT: Chrome store comparison:

please confirm if it's also for you speeddial-downloads.js the only problematic one.

Any chance of adding tar.gz, i don't want to install it, just to try it a little bit?

And what advanced "script-blocker" does he use instead, 'cause the things you do with uMatrix you can't do with uBlock. uBlock is primarily an engine for enforcing filter lists with some light/generic script blocking. Just because some software requires less patching by design (contrary to uBlock) I wouldn't say that it is abandoned.
cc: @Steffie Current uMatrix dev build is at v1.4.1b6 of Feb 24, 2020, there have been 3 builds since November 2019 https://github.com/gorhill/uMatrix/releases
-
@Steffie you're not the only hold-out. I'm still using UM
-
Why haven't you fixed the issue with USA today and pages that have video popups going blank???? Now the it is even worse this beta release. More pages go blank and trying to go back a page or just change the page can cause the whole browser to crash.
-
Oh dratty dribbles -- i've spent the past few hours reading all the uBO Gorhill GitHub documentation to relearn the finer points of uBO, & then been working my way thru' finessing my dynamic global filters & local filters per site.
Now i feel like a goose all over again, sigh.
An hour later...
Nope, have retreated back to the comfy warm embrace of uM.
My tweaking & finessing of uBO was humming along quite nicely, but just now it fell in a heap. One of my primary domestic news sites has a soft paywall, which i easily bypass with uM, yet uBO cannot defeat it. Now i remember all over again why it was, those years back, that i did choose uM over uBO -- as good as uBO is, uM is simply much better for fine granularity in its dynamic filtering controls.

@floweringmind If I were to make a guess, it's one of:
- They haven't managed to identify the root cause of it yet.
- It turned out to be a big bug requiring a large amount of work so they haven't finished it yet.
- People are still on vacation, and whoever is best suited for fixing that bug might not be back yet.
