Vivaldi broken on upgrade to latest version
-
Same problem here. MacOS 10.13.6. Have to wait a minute or two. After quitting Vivaldi 3 and reopening does the same - have to wait.
Downgrading back to v2. -
From what we know, this issue is affecting users on macOS 10.13 and older. Our devs are looking into it and we're hoping to fix the bug ASAP.
In many cases, like @timi mentioned, waiting a few minutes helps and the browser returns to normal (at least until you restart the browser).
Thank you for your patience and keep an eye on browser updates.
As a side-note, as this issue is only present on older macOS versions, if upgrading to the latest version is an option, that could be something to consider as well. Not just for the sake of getting Vivaldi to work, but for macOS' own improvements and security updates as well.

@jane-n Thanks for this. Will keep a look-out for the fix...
-
Thanks for the update @jane-n - Unfortunately I don't have the option to upgrade to anything higher than macOS 10.13.6 on my 2011 MBP. I use this machine mainly when relaxing on the couch, where my regular laptop would fry my legs off.
-
Same here, thanks for keeping us posted, and updating the operating system would mean upgrading to a new system, which is not an option…

Wanted to confirm - I am running 10.11.6 - the prior version worked fine but this version is a gray screen and nothing else. Left it sit for 20 minutes and came back and still a gray screen.
-
@eggwin Thank you so much for this link!!!

I'm on Mac OS 10.12.6 Sierra and the latest update ruined the opening of the browser. All I get now is a blank dead screen that CRASHES Vivaldi. I have to do a "Force Close"
When I reverted back down to Vivaldi version 2.11.1811.47, I get back my browser back to working operation status!
-
Updating to Catalina is not an option for me either. I guess I stick to 2.11.1811.52.
-
@timi Same thing happened to me - so I downloaded the new version from this site, because it had updated from within the browser before, and, after installing, opened it up. And yeah, there was the blank window again. But, I just waited about two to three minutes, and it all came back up. So it's something to do with the new stuff getting settled. After that initial wait, though, I figured it would start up much faster when I booted it up again.... Nope, still takes about three minutes to actually come alive. That's a problem....

Vivaldi.3.0.1874.23.dmg
2015 15" mbp, osx 10.14.6 - no problem with the upgrade
2011 17" mbp, osx 10.12.6 - same grey screen and dead browser that others are seeing.I've waited 12 minutes and the browser hasn't responded, but then I had a lot of windows open. I'll wait another 20 before attempting to replace with the latest v2 version.
[edit: more than 20m later]
no response. quit v3 without problem. downloaded last v2.11, started up without problem with all windows intact. -
Please try to avoid downgrading the browser to an older version as it can cause issues in your profile, if not immediately, then possibly in the future.
-
@jane-n We don't really have a choice, other than to use another browser until the bug between Vivaldi and the pre osx 10.14 interaction is fixed.

This post is deleted! -
Same error here on OSX 10.13 (iMac 2014). Latest working Vivaldi version for me is https://downloads.vivaldi.com/snapshot/Vivaldi.2.12.1862.3.dmg (Beta Snapshot with option to disable the video popout).
After some minutes the gray window is loading, but is unsuitable like this. Deleting the profile folder/com.vivaldi.Vivaldi.plist does not help.
Please also test on older systems in the future. One reason to use vivaldi is the possibility to run it on old machines.

We have a fix and, if everything goes according to plan, it will be released in the Minor Update tomorrow.
-
@jane-n Thanks to all at Vivaldi for this quick fix. All working well now for me (OS High Sierra 10.13.6).
-
Hey all! We've now released a Minor Update for Vivaldi 3.0. Please update your browser.
If you still encounter any issues, please leave a comment for the QA and devs in the Minor Update blog. -
@jane-n I was having the same problem, thank you sooooooo much for the update, Vivaldi is now my favourite and default browser in all of my devices
