is there way to have Opera style 'workspaces' in Vivaldi ?
-
hi, i have a very limited knowledge of extensions and i just wondering if there was a way to get Opera style workspaces in Vivaldi?
-
What do these do?
-
@ultraviolet Take a look at Session Management and User Profiles

so, down the side where Vivaldi has the web panels opera has the ability to create browser windows which can be labelled , so you could have one maybe labelled 'gaming' and could have all your gaming sites there. just like having multiple browser windows open but all self-contained in one window.
i hope i've explained this ok

@ultraviolet Right, thanks. Well Vivaldi already has a great tab management system integrated, it's called tab stacks. You can create tab stacks by dragging "thematical" tabs onto each other, and with other ways too (Ctrl/shift+select, or via hostname), which (group) you can rename then to your liking and manage it (add more tabs for example in the tab stack), saving the tab stack as Bookmarks or as a Session, all through the window panel (F4) or via the tab menu.
for example, I've made those stacks and renamed them to my liking and I can drag more tabs to each category if I want to:

https://help.vivaldi.com/article/tab-stacks/P.S. Vivaldi supports also multiple profiles where you can create one for Work etc, as Pesala said.

thanks for the info

@npro just what i'm needing, thanks for that

Can you make a short cut on the side panel toolbar for sessions? I think if you could that would closely mimic Opera's work spaces. Opera's workspaces lets you have a set of tabs associated with a workspace and then a completely different set of tabs associated with another workspace and then you can just click an icon in the left side panel to switch between workspaces.
-
@browseruser A Sessions Panel is one of the top feature requests.
Sessions could do with some attention.
-
Would be nice to see Sessions incorporated in a seamless way of how Opera does it.
-
I know Vivaldi offers Sessions, Profiles and Tab stacks, which I use a lot (except Sessions because I find them complicated).
But Workspaces really is the one feature that I'm missing from Opera: I'll try to describe why is that, and how they are different from what Vivaldi currently provides.
Profiles:
I only use Profiles to have 2 separated browsers: one for my Job and one for my Personnal life.
Each profile is synced to its own Vivaldi account, has its own bookmarks, history, cookies, extensions, etc...My Job profile is synced on my job's PC, while both Job and Personnal profiles are synced to my home PC (because I often work from home). Finally, my Personnal profile is also synced to my phone's Vivaldi app.
Tab Stacks:
I tried to use them like I used Opera's workspaces, but with less satisfaction (I'll explain why below).
But they are great for some use cases, including:-
Having some "long-term tabs" of the same kind. For example: I have a Tab Stack containing some websites I use everyday to note down movies/games/books that I've just watched or played. I also have another stack for videos I'm currently watching when taking a break or eating.
-
Taking advantage of the Page Tiling. Useful when you want to compare different pages from one website, or when you're about to do some "manual batch processing".
Opera's Workspaces (maybe Vivaldi's future Sessions?):
I currently have so many tabs open on different "topics":
- searching for a laptop (comparisons, shops, reviews... potentially many of each)
- managing my NAS and Plex library (admin UI, files, Plex UI, TheMovieDatabase for matching movies and shows, much research when I'm adding records to TMDb...)
- searching for a gift for my parents
- organizing a holiday
- etc...
A topic could be "semi-permanent", it could span several days or weeks, or it could only live a few hours...
And below are the reasons why I don't think Tab stacks are a good fit for this, while Opera's Workspaces are:
- I can have many tabs open for one topic.
- I keep opening and closing tabs while doing my research (and I don't want to bother with bookmark folders each time I'm switching topic).
- I constantly switch between tabs, and I need to see them clearly, and access them in one click.
- When I'm working on one topic, I don't want to see tabs from other topics, or to mix them, it can make me lose focus.
As for Sessions: I don't use them currently because it's so much of a headache... I wish we could create, manage and switch Sessions as easily as Opera's Workspaces: this would be a killer feature! And I think it would cover the needs I listed above.

What would work is if you could have the tabs of a given stack showing in the tab bar (and hide the rest in the sidebar). Or maybe a 2-level tab bar with stacks on the top level and the current stack's tabs on the second level. Presumably this second level would collapse if you select a tab that is not in a stack.
I doubt you could do either by modding the UI, unfortunately.

I couldn't have said it better. Using sessions for this doesn't cut it. Please check the "feature request" forums and upvote this request!

@Seeven Well said! Like you, I also like the way Opera does workspaces. It would be fantastic if Vivaldi could implement something similar.
-
@npro Tab stack is ok but when you have workspace then you have more space to other tabs becouse you sort it like new window, so sorted tabs not always showing on "main" workspace
-
There is already a Tab Stack feature; I like the tab tiling idea, but the tab stacking and saving it as one session and again opening the saved sessions from already saved sessions is time-consuming work to do while working for hours and hours.
Workplaces for organizing tabs for particular purposes and managing the tabs from the side panel could help switch between multiple tabs.
Short and simple, Just like OPERA BROWSER.
I have completely switched to VIVALDI BROWSER. I'm looking for more easily accessible customizations.
I appreciate it if you consider this or any help you can provide.

I agree that standalone workspaces shall be better for overall productivity.
A common practise for me is to open 2 different browser windows:: one for work stuff and the other for personal stuff. Each window has it's own set of tabs & its stacks.
Of course, I can't close either of the windows without saving them as a session [which I find cumbersome] so I don't generally exit from the browser often.
Yes, it does suck up a lot of memory. Hence I'd too appreciate Vivaldi building a workspace-like feature into the browser for higher productivity.
P.S. Or in case any alternative existing method could be used for this purpose [such as profiles, maybe] but in a better way, do elucidate

@seeven SOLUTION:
-
Enable Automatic Stacking (As Tab Stack with Related Tab)
-
Rename the stack
-
Two-Level Tab Stacking
It does the job of Opera Workspace for me
This video is a great tutorial of tabs:

@mrtabaa
when you have workspace then you have more space to other tabs becouse you sort it like new window that why tab stack is not perfect
