Thumbnails for Speed Dial to Slow to Load
-
I have a few pages of thumbnails for my Speed Dial. They can be very slow  to load. If I shut the browser down for a while, I'm back again to having none loaded. It seems to take forever. If the thumbnails are stored in cache, I'm not sure why it should be so slow, particularly if one has a fast computer. It's possible the thumbnails are too large -- take too much memory. Opera 29's speed dial is much faster to load, and there the icons are smaller. Now the Speed Dial is quite promising. I like that one can have multiple pages, and also, it would seem, folders within folders. Still, the slowness of loading the images/thumbnails is a problem. A nit, in addition to consistent speed in loading thumbnails, but one simply cannot load a thumbnail for some sites. Not sure why. I'm able to get a thumbnail for those sites in Opera 29 and Firefox with Super Start 7.3.3 (Speed Dial extenseion)

We know about Speed Dial's issues. We are going to fix them, but it'll take some time to do it properly.

What you need to know is that Chromium's cache is terrible, to the point of being nearly useless.
And I'm just saying 'nearly' because maybe, in some situation, it may serve for something.
The team will need some good work to get it properly done.

Is there any hope Chromium itself can be altered/changed/improved in regards to this? Or is caching set in stone as it is now?

Today for some reason the thumbnails loaded better. Now what happened was that I turned the computer on, but didn't load Vivaldi. Then I came back an hour or two later and they were relatively quickly there. It's hard to imagine though that something with the thumbnails could be loading in that hour or two when the computer was on and I hadn't started Vivaldi, but when I did start it, the four pages of speed dials with a lot thumbnails all loaded okay, that is, relatively quickly. There are days and then other days. :cheer:
A nit of sorts. For some sites – though a tiny percentage at that -- one just can't get a loaded thumbnail for the Speed Dial. Not sure why. Maybe it's ads at the site that block the thumbnail. However, one can get a thumbnail for those same sites in Opera 29 and in Firefox with it's Super Start Speed Dial.
Anyway, Christoph 142, it's good to know that the Vivaldi team is still planning work on the Speed Dial. As it is, it's still fun to use, though needs refinements/improvements..

Yes, it can be modified, it's source code and you just need to change it.
The problem is the amount of work needed, for the small number of Vivaldi devs it would take too much their time. I would say that even if Opera & Google joined to bring Chromium cache to a good level would take a year.

I like the large thumbnails. They look great, though some users might like to be able to adjust the size that they have showing. The issue for me seems to be slow loading, after you clean cache or history. Otherwise, the speed dial loads relatively well for me, even when I open it a new time. I bet that issue – after a browser cleaning of history/cache -- could be solved easily by :silly: giving the user the option to exempt from cleaning, cache that goes toward the speed dial page (from the rest of cache).

I still think SD thumbs should be stored as Presto Opera, in a special folder only for them in an image format so we can easily modify them.
