Address bar delay (sucks)
-
When I open a new tab with Ctrl+T and start typing an address - I like when the url is immediately pre-filled with the top hit suggestion from my history. For example, here is what happens when I start typing 'youtube.com' in Opera: The rest of the url is immediately auto-completed as soon as I press the first letter of the url. 95/100 times it is the address that I want to go to - I can just hit <enter>right away and start loading the page. In Vivavldi - there is a very annoying delay between starting to type and the auto-completion of the address: I don't mind this delay for search suggestions (I realize you need to go to the server and grab them). But the top url should be pre-filled instantly, with no delay. Who's with me? B)</enter>

I'm with you. I lost track of times I wanted to go to the index page but ended entering in /some-page-that-was-in-my-history.html. This is another great difference between Opera Presto and Chrome, autocomplete only works with manually typed addresses it doesn't use the history. Just try typing an url that you never typed but is in your history and you'll see it won't autocomplete. Maybe Vivaldi can go one step up and autocomplete from history but only until the domain name.
I also find that it shows too much stuff in the drop-down. There are a thousand of bookmark entries and then a thousand of history entries. It should show much less stuff, just like Opera.

It sounds something like a little glitch, but instead is a great usability problem.
Devil is in the details…

I agree with this. Also I've had another problem with delays that may be related, where pausing to look for completion then selects what I've typed, and then continuing typing deletes the selected, previously entered text.

@hatter the address bar is still very buggy. The delay, the problem you've described, and many more. I'm doing my best to report any bugs I discover. I sure hope we'll see some fixes start coming in.

This is an issue we are working on at this time. Both with regards to speed and with regards to choosing the right element on auto-complete. This will likely require some code rewriting so it will take a little time, but we are on it.
As a side note, Opera Presto actually did do auto-complete on history and it worked pretty well. We just have some work to do still. It took a long time to get it just right in Opera as well and we aim to do one better.
Cheers,

Thanks Jon,
There's another issue that drives me crazy on Chromium browsers and it's the way the auto-complete is selected.
If I have an auto-completed address and try to Shift+Left Arrow, it will select only the letter before the auto-complete and not the auto-complete plus the letter. Opera 12 had it working correctly. Also happens with Ctrl+Shift+Left Arrow & Shift+End.

If you have not done it, please report a bug on it and we will have a look.

+1 Can not wait for this to be fixed. lol Drives me crazy!!!

Great to hear there is ongoing work here. Indeed it's all in the details.
One thing with some browsers' inline autocomplete is that it suggests the wrong url. Opera keeps suggesting someone's twitter profile at the top of the list even though I scroll to the third person's account and select that one over and over again -please learn from input and frecency! Another is that it breaks the use of backspace. I type you, it is autocompleted to youtube, press backspace and type xyz.com - my muscle memory will tell me I typed yoxyz.com but the browser insists it's youxyz.com. In short: let delete remove the suggestion and backspace the suggestion AND the previous character.Indeed lots of details to stand out.

If you have not done it, please report a bug on it and we will have a look.
Cheers,
Jon.Done, as Weird auto-complete selection is left-to-right

Just checked the latest build for OS X - it seems like the delay issue was solved! (Developers, please correct me if I'm wrong)
But it works much better now, thanks!

This can be very annoying some times.
I wish there was a button like in Google search that allows me to get rid of any of the suggestion, like so:

Personally I'm very happy with autocomplete on my history, sounds like another tickybox option for the prefs pane when the search bar matures a bit for those that like or dislike it. Glad to hear the address bar been noted and recognised as an area to work on, and thanks to everyone involved for all the work put in Vivaldi already, and look forward to testing more improvements and features.
