Vivaldi not reading bookmarks file after update
-
Vivaldi 2.10.1745.27 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
Revision 0cff17186b317ac1935c017269c5e1e8c4620320After the last update my bookmarks are totally blank. I looked into the default folder and opened the Bookmarks file in a test editor and it looks like they are all there. So Vivaldi does not appear to to be able to read the Bookmarks. To check for a corrupted file I replaced the file with an older backup. Still nothing. I really find this frustrating. Can I use sync to restore my Bookmarks? If so how. I can find nothing online except manually copying Bookmark files. Vivaldi's Bookmark handling in this regard is still absolutely abysmal.

Hi
You would try:
- Backup your current Profile
- Create a new V Profile
- Import Bookmarks from the old Profile
Despite seems is not detecting them maybe it works.
--
If you was using Sync they should be downloaded if still there.
You can try it also on a new Test profile before messing the old one.

Follow the Signature's BackUp | Reset link.
Take the opportunity to start a Backup plan, even create a Template Profile.

@Exomancer Hello there,
we need to know your OS and how Vivaldi was installed. Do you Sync?
-
@lamarca
Kubuntu 18.04
Vivaldi is updated from the vivaldi-stable PPA.
I Sync once in a while as a backup. -
@Zalex108
"If you was using Sync they should be downloaded if still there."I do have a Sync. My question on this is If I Sync how do I know the current bookmarks won't overwrite the saved ones?

Because of this I said to do it on a Clean/Test Profile.
You could previously delete all the default Bookmarks and then Sync.

I Sync once in a while as a backup.
I recommend you to use any of the Linux Tools for Backup or use Synkron.
Also,
Extensions data is not in Sync, if you computer crashes you will need to set them up again - or Live copy the Profile ... -. -
@Exomancer Thx for the info. There is a backup of the bookmarks file (bookmarks.bak) in your profile folder.
- close Vivaldi
- go to your profile folder
- move the Bookmarks file to a different local
- rename the backup to Bookmarks.bak → Bookmarks
If everything fails, let me know.

That procedure is slightly different from windowz:)

But V Profile manager is on Linux also, right?
What's different?
-
@Zalex108 Hey. I liked the question.
We know the issue is the bookmark file, hence a clean install won't help much.
Regarding procedure, it's preferable the use of command line.
Do you have bookmarks.bak, dont you?
Hope I managed to sort things outOff: 400 metros de respecto

Good also.
Profile manager seems easiest.Do you have bookmarks.bak, dont you?
Yes,
But when is the backup created?
Maybe is empty also.Hope I managed to sort things out

What does this mean?

Thank you for your help. I fixed it ... sort of.
I lost my last bookmarks.
I Synced and that fixed my Bookmarks. However it also deleted my Notes even though the notes was not checked for the sync process. So Sync is screwed up. I manually copied my notes file and fixed that issue.Since the Sync I have been having problems with Vivaldi locking up on me with some process not related to any extension I can find that is associated with
vivaldi-bin --type+renderer --disable-webrtc-apm-in-audio-service --field-trial-handle=3250168613678667619,1024949636194859637,131072
followed by more it would take forever to type. Both extensions with webrtc blocking (uBlock Origin, and WebRTC Leak Prevent) are disabled. This is causing memory lockups with the browser unresponsive for minutes at a time to downright crashes. Vivaldi has crashed 3 times writing this comment. For some reason it is now quiet and not hogging memory.
I then reinstalled Vivaldi.
Writing this the system is starting to hog memory again ... I can't mouse select a location to fix my typing in this text box anymore and must backspace in this box to get to a correction location) ...
Arrow keying backward crashed Vivaldi again (4th time writing this).
I must say the crash recovery is much improved. However the constant crashing is a major problem. As is the backup for the Bookmarks and Notes.
My question about Sync was this: Almost all sync app I know: NEW > Old. If the New was the problem How would Vivaldi know OLD > New?

What is V Profile Manager?General comment:
The Vivaldi Devs keep adding features which is great but are ignoring this very longstanding problem with protecting Bookmarks, Notes, Passwords etc. If it's because Chrome does it that way then Chrome is wrong! This should NOT be the problem it is. I have lost Bookmarks many times on Vivaldi updates. I had to keep full profile backups until last October when the problem seemed to disappear. Now it's back. So every update I have to go back to MANUALLY backing up my profiles in case the update eats my stuff???? And recovery is an absolute pain! All manual. Does ANYBODY see something wrong in this? No built in automatic backup system. No recovery system. Why? A browser is one of the most IMPORTANT software packages on just about anyone's machine. Since Chrome they're all mucked up. People are using Brave and Vivaldi to have good safe browsing. I don't need new features if the browser can't protect my stuff. -
You are welcome. Glad to know the bookmarks recovery.
Since the bookmark issue is solved, the topic should be tagged as resolved
In case you have a different issue, please, start a new thread.
Thx@Zalex108 I tagged as resolved.

The problems mostly comes from the custom settings instead of the V files.

I don't understand that.
If you mean about 2 profiles:- OLD - Bookmarks lost and somehow broken
- NEW - Bookmarks and Notes recovered, but somehow broken if it has responsiveness problems
But I don't understand the question.
"Some extensions are known incompatible, maybe is something related"

I don't understand that.
If you mean about 2 profiles:OLD - Bookmarks lost and somehow broken
NEW - Bookmarks and Notes recovered, but somehow broken if it has responsiveness problemsBut I don't understand the question.
NEW means my current up to date Bookmarks dated later than those stored in Sync located on my system.
OLD means my last synced Bookmarks on the Vivaldi sync server. How does Vivaldi Sync know to download and overwrite the Blank NEW (latest dated) Bookmarks on my system) instead of uploading and overwriting the OLD (stored on the sync server older dated Bookmarks) leaving me with a blank Bookmark file stored on the server.
You see the problem. In a straight standard sync, NEW overwrites OLD. I can't tell Vivaldi Sync which way to go. How does it know the NEW blank version on my computer is the one I want overwritten by the OLD server copy of my last sync? It did it correctly but how did it know which way I wanted to sync?
V Profile Manager
Yeah I know about that. All it does is add or delete profiles.
Where did you found the entry?
That was recovered from the running process in the System Monitor.
Using the same Profile?
Yes. I don't want a billion profiles.
Thanks for all your help.

@Zalex108
SyncBack is Windows only. I loved SyncBack Free when I was a Windows user. However I now use Kubuntu Linux so I can't use SyncBack anymore.I will look into Synkron. Thanks.
-
Well,
Aparently, if you have some BKs and then activate Sync, they should be mixed.
Then any deletion should be updated.
--
On Windows you have to use specific tools for that amount of info.
Ok,
I'll see here, but no problems for now.--
On V Profiles Manager,
You can have a Test profile, and in case something won't work, test it there.Depending on the result the problems is a Bug or a Custom Settings mess.
--
SyncBack is great!
Synkron is at least a crossplataform alternative.RSync for Linux seems to be good as I've read on forums.
--
If there are problems again,
I would start a new profile, set it up and back it up before Sync.
As a plain "Template" profile. Then enable Sync and get all personal Stuff and do another back up.
Could be keept as initial or rewrite it with weekly back ups.If you want another profile for Entertainment, Study, Work, Shopping... the Template will be ready to add any custom data on that specific profile.
Even if you share V with relatives / friends it will be set it up in just one shot.
