Problem with HTML5 Proprietary Media on Linux [Fedora Silverblue]
-
Hello, when starting vivaldi (snapshot) it already warns me that something is missing (the proprietary HTML5 audio and video) and gives me a page to go. I followed the steps of the page in question but unsuccessfully returning this to me:
mkdir: could not create directory“ /var/opt/vivaldi-snapshot/media-codecs-78.0.3904.70 ”: Read-only file system
.Any solution to this?

It doesn't sound like a Vivaldi issue, but it doesn't look like a Linux permission issue either. This looks like it's going to be a pain.
What's the output of mount?
garrett@hardlydebian:~$ mount # snipped to save space /dev/sda6 on /home type ext4 (rw,relatime) binfmt_misc on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw,relatime) tmpfs on /run/user/1000 type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,size=816992k,mode=700,uid=1000,gid=1000)
Maybe a partition is loading read-only after some filesystem error?

@Gwen-Dragon This is the old fedora atomic-workstation, based on OSTree, I can not explain properly because they are very technical terms. It seems to me that your goal is to be an unchanging system, so it's different from a common fedora system, see.
-
@Gwen-Dragon I didn't find anything important in gnome's syslog about these subjects.
-
@Gwen-Dragon I reported as a bug, hopefully they can solve this problem, I can't live without Vivaldi haha
-
@Gwen-Dragon That's makes two of us.

I reported as a bug
Please, can you post bug number for our follow up.
-
@lamarca Sure here it is VB-62198.
-
@Nlope Thx. I added a comment.
Btw, have you posted on Fedora forum as well? -
@lamarca I will post
-
@Nlope Good. It is not Vivaldi related, it's the OS.
-
Filesystem looks normal.
I'm really bad at debugging SELinux issues... have you tried anything in that realm? Maybe just temporarily disable it for this script or set the context for this folder to be more permissive?
-
Hello there,
The user reported the bug (VB-62198), I commented it, btw. It's clearly the OS where the issue lies. @Nlope was suggested to post on Fedora forum.
-
this actually seems to be hit or miss. by that i mean one time you install vivaldi do as asked and it takes, the next time it does not. i don't think it's vivaldi specific. i do believe it has more to do with the order of installs once on a fresh install of the linux distro. need a specific order to install vivaldi and vivaldi-snapshot.
as for install location mine has always been /home/my username/.config/vivaldi and /home/my username/.config/vivaldi-snapshot
-
Indeed. At the end of the the install, a wrapper function check the codecs. In case "something" is missing. the user will be warned.
No suitable library for HTML5 proprietary media (MP4[H.264/AAC]) was found,
therefore only open codecs will play. -
@Gwen-Dragon You're awesome, it worked !!! I love you Gwen, I was already hopeless. lol
I have another question: does the downloadable RPM package update itself without having to download again or will I have to keep downloading whenever a new version is released?

I have another question: does the downloadable RPM package .......
Then you will have to start a new thread as this one is resolved.
