Vivaldi won't become the default browser {Thunderbird mail}
-
I have just installed Vivaldi 2.6.1566.44 on Ubuntu 19.04, and I cannot get it to make itself the default browser. I click on the button in settings, but nothing happens. I check the box for Vivaldi to check if it is the default browser on start, but when I close down and then start Vivaldi again, it does not seem to check, and certainly doesn't change it to be the default browser. Can't seem to find anything in any log to indicate any problem. Has anyone else run into this?
Thanks!

sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser
Run the command above to see what shows. You should be able to select a default browser there.

Thanks for this. Though it didn't solve the problem, it led to the right path. When I ran the command, it came up and showed that Firefox was the current default browser, and then listed all the other browsers that were installed, to include Vivaldi. I chose Vivaldi as the new default browser, but when I clicked on a link in email, the link was still brought up in Firefox. I ran the update-alternatives command again, and it showed that Vivaldi was the default browser.
After a bit more googling, I ran across another command:
xdg-settings set default-web-browser
So I ran xdg-settings set default-web-browser vivaldi-stable.desktop, and then ran xdg-settings get default-web-browser, and it showed that Vivaldi was set as the default web browser, but when I clicked on the link in email again, it still came up in Firefox.
So off for some more searching, and it turns out that since I was using the KDE desktop, all I had to do was go into the System Settings menu, choose Applications, Default Applications, Web Browser and set Vivaldi as the default. Now clicking on any link brings up that link in Vivaldi.
I had just gotten so used to browsers being able to set themselves as the default, that I never had to go into any settings, or run any commands to set them as default before.

@jfucci said in Vivaldi won't become the default browser:

Vivaldi doesn't require any additional procedure to be set as default browser.

By clicking on links in an email and having the link open in Firefox and not Vivaldi.

Thunderbird.

That is actually a feature of Thunderbird and not a bug. This allows you to use a browser other than the default browser set by your OS. The default action for Thunderbird is to use the default browser set by the OS.

Thanks for the nice feedback.

Had same issue and tried all posted suggestions which did not work for my desktop. Then stumbled upon a Thunderbird add on called "Open With" by Geoff Lankow when searching add-ons in Thunderbird. Selected add to Thunderbird which then had to reboot to complete. Clicked on a link in an email to test it and a small message appeared at the bottom of my screen stating click to configure. Selected open with a list and moved Vivaldi to the top followed by Firefox and then Chrome. Now the links in e-mail messages open just fine. Very simple easy fix and so far, no problems or side effects.
