When using Snapshot version.
-
Why do people often recommend to use Snapshots as standalone version?
What are the benefits of it?And is it safe at all, to only use the snapshot version of vivaldi?
I'm new to vivaldi, so I would appreciate abit clarification on this topic.
-
I started using the standalone Snapshot version as my default browser almost two years ago, and never looked back. I have the Stable version as well but I've never updated it since May 2018 because I never use it.
There is always a chance that things could go horribly wrong, but I've never experienced it. Slight glitches, minor bugs, are all I've ever seen, and they're not showstoppers. But that's in line with my particular setup and workflow. All in all I've never had to fall back on the Stable version.
I like using Snapshot because I get to use features before they're officially released. I gotta say, after being a tester for various software the past 20 years, Vivaldi Snapshot has been the most stable unstable software I ever used.

I see. Thanks for the headsup guys.
@Gwen-Dragon What exactly do you mean by ''different profile'' ?
What kind of profile data could I loose, if something goes wrong. Are Bookmarks and/or Browser History included ?
Or just my profile settings?I'm just using the snapshot version since yesterday, and I'm not sure if I installed the standalone or not. How can I check?
I read that it's recommended installing it as a ''standalone in its own folder'' . How can I do that?

@JoelYoung I allready have that Link open. So there should be no issues at all, if I just install the latest snapshot again, but now as a standalone version? In terms of overwriting files.
-
@hyperboraeer That link explains in exact detail how to do it, without messing up the stable version.
-
@hyperboraeer But if you previously installed Snapshot normally, you most likely overwrote the Stable version. So you'd need to uninstall THAT version and reinstall Stable.

Yes, I think that I installed the snapshot normally, because I only see a single vivaldi folder, which is now much smaller, than the stable version was.
If I uninstall the snapshot, my bookmarks, webpanel, extensions & extension links, active session, and everything else, are backed-up in my vivaldi profile, right?
-
@hyperboraeer You should back up all that data, and/or make note of your settings.
To avoid confusion at this point, your best move now is to:
-
- Uninstall Vivaldi altogether
-
- Reinstall Stable the normal way, and redo your settings, bookmarks, etc. Get Stable the way you want it.
-
- Install Snapshot standalone per the the instructions in that link. If I recall correctly you'll be given the option to import your settings from Stable.
-
-
In order to back up all the data, I must save the ''Default'' folder somewhere else right? (AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default)
Then I uninstall my current vivaldi version.
Install the Stable version, and after that I install the Snapshot standalone.
If I'm not given the option, to import the settings from Stable, can I import the backed up Default folder into the new Standalone? -

Take what you need from that.

I had just opened that guide a few minutes ago^^
Thanks anyway. I will read everything in that topic, before I decide to proceed. -
After a few tries, I'm finally done, and I think I did everything correctly.
I installed Snapshot as standalone on the desktop in the ''own documents'' folder.
(C:\Users\Desktop\Documents\User Data\Default)
It's the same drive as the Stable is in, with the difference that the stable is installed in the programms folder.
So did I install Standalone the right way?Should I uninstall the Stable now, or just keep it where it is?
For some reason, I cannot open ''netflix.com'' with the Snapshot. It's not loading. Just a white paper as tab icon.

Why in Documents? Not really the right place for user programs.
Please delete Vivaldi files fromC:\Users\\Desktop\Documents\
, run the Snapshot installer and useC:\Users\Desktop\AppData\Local\Vivaldi Snapshot
as a destination.Exactly which Vivaldi files do you mean, I must delete?
There are 2 Folders; ''Application'' and ''User Data'' -> where the ''default'' backup is stored. Also in the Local folder, there is allready the Stable installed. Do you want me to create a Snapshot folder manually within Local?
This Guide says not to install the Standalone, in the Program files folder ''(anywhere except the Program Files folder)''
If I install the Standalone in C:\Users\Desktop\AppData\Local\Vivaldi - It wouldn't be in the desktop?I can not see this with my 2.9.1745.22. May be you have some security program blocking the netflix domain.
I checked my antivirus, and Netflix.com is actually in the whitelist. So I suppose that vivaldi is blocking it somehow.

@Gwen-Dragon My question is the following. Correct me if I'm wrong:
I will now back-up the default folder of the Standalone, that I placed in Desktop/documents,
and install the Snapshot Standalone again, in C:\Users\Desktop\AppData\Local\Vivaldi SnapshotBy doing so, will it definitely be installed in desktop?
-
@Gwen-Dragon I did that now. Seems like everything has worked flawlessly.
Only problem I'm facing is, that I cannot delete the old Snapshot from desktop that was saved in /documents.
Just can't get rid of it:
-
@Gwen-Dragon I also got this notification, telling me that there is a new Snapshot version.
As you can see below, I have allready installed the latest version. This is about the Snapshot that I installed in /Documents and cannot delete.
Behind you can see the ''vivaldi://about'' page, with the latest Snapshot installation: -
Yes. After doing some research, I realized that it was the Update notifier of the previous installation, still running in the background. After disabling it,
I could finally delete everything from the old Snapshot installation.Thank you both very much for your patience with me.
I appreciate it alot. -
