Cannot edit bookmarks or use New Bookmarks
-
Why is there no way to edit bookmarks in the bookmarks manager? I cannot edit the address, only the title. Also, the "New Bookmark" item does not work. I cannot put anything at all into the new bookmark. Does that mean that I have to bookmark something with another browser and then drag the bookmark over to Vivaldi? That does work, at least.

@Streptococcus When you open the bookmark manager, there should be 5 columns:-
- Title
- Address
- Nickname
- Description
- (untitled)
You use column 5 to change/add each field for the selected bookmark.
I'm not sure where you are having problems? Can you not see the 5th column?
-
@Streptococcus you con go of holder or and page on bookmark bar to edit.
bookmark bar do not have a url. use mouseoe or pad to edit hope it helps -
@Streptococcus No such problem here. Do you see this panel on the right?
-
I set up the bookmark manager so that I see only 2 columns because my bookmark titles and locations have long names. The suggestion to use the bookmarks toolbar menu works. Thanks. I also found a nice extension that allows editing, and also searching for specific items.
I am curious as to why the Start Page shortcuts have to be on the bookmarks toolbar? -

They don't. Right-click in the Speed Dial folder in Bookmarks to remove it from the Bookmarks Bar.
-
If I delete Start Page from the bookmarks toolbar, the things I added to it disappear.

@Streptococcus Try Drag and Drop. The context menu does not seem correct to me. It says "Remove from Speed Dial," not "Remove from Bookmark Bar."

The bookmarks manager does not seem to help in that regard. It does not suggest anywhere to move it to. Remove from speed dial removes the content from the start page, and I do not want that. As for drag and drop, to where would I drag it?
-
@Streptococcus I would drag it to the top of the list and drop it before the Bookmark Bar folder.

Everything in the bookmarks is in the bookmarks bar. Start Page is already at the top of the list. I could not access all the bookmarks from folders in the bookmarks bar if that were not the case. There is nothing in the bookmark manager called Bookmark Bar except a checkbox at the right side, and I have no idea what that is for. I got the bookmarks into Vivaldi by importing them from Slimjet, and they are treated almost the same but not quite.
-
@Streptococcus Not all bookmarks have to be on the Bookmark Bar for easy access. You can drag your Speed Dial folder above the top of the Bookmark Bar folder as in my screen shot (Perhaps you need to create one first?)
- Very frequently bookmarks can be added to the Speed Dial
- Regularly used bookmarks are best located on the Bookmark Bar
- All other bookmarks (those that are rarely used) can be accessed easily from the Bookmark Menu.
-
If I want to edit the bookmarks, I have to have an internal bookmarks menu to do that with a Mac. The main menu at the top of the screen is controlled by MacOS and the bookmarks cannot be changed from there. Trying to rearrange things just screwed up everything on the bar. I shall just have to put up with Start Page being on the bookmarks bar.
-
@Streptococcus I don't understand why you cannot edit the bookmark URL in the Bookmarks Tab (or Panel). The panel where the Import and Update Thumbnails buttons are as in my screenshot above shows the URL. You should be able to edit it there. TbGbe is using Linux Mint and I am using Windows, so if MacOS is different where can you edit the bookmarks?
-
@Pesala
MacOS is different. The main menu bar is outside the application window at the top of the screen. It is controlled by MacOS, which does not support changing things in menus. I have an internal bookmarks menu on my bookmarks toolbar, and that works. I renamed the folder item for non-bookmarklets and I think that has prevented any more screwups, but I'll just put up with Start Page being on the toolbar. I moved it to the end instead of the beginning. -
@Streptococcus I'm still unclear as to what you are seeing and what you are trying to accomplish.
A new Vivaldi installation comes bundled with a collection of bookmarks. (One of those folders is called "Speed Dial". There's nothing special about the Speed Dial folder itself or its name but it does have the Speed Dial attribute set which is what causes its bookmarks to appear on the Vivaldi's Start Page. You can also have multiple speed dial sections on the Start Page by setting the Speed Dial attribute on any bookmark folder.)
As for the Vivaldi's default bookmarks, you can keep them, delete them, or do as I do: keep the bookmarks but move them all into a sub-folder.
When you import bookmarks into an existing bookmark tree, they go into an "Imported" folder. You can move those bookmarks to any part of the bookmark tree using the Bookmark Manager, which can be a opened from the Bookmarks menu on the macOS menu bar or can be also be found on the Bookmarks section of the Start Page.
The Bookmarks menu on the macOS menu bar will display the entire bookmark tree and it will render the bookmark tree as it appears in the Bookmarks section of the Start Page. If you sort bookmarks in the Bookmark Manager, they will also appear sorted on the Bookmarks menu on the menu bar.
The Bookmark Bar is a bit different. By default, the Bookmark Bar displays the entire bookmark tree but you can also configure Vivaldi to display only a subset of your bookmarks tree using the Select Bookmark Bar Folder setting. You don't configure this from the Bookmark Manager but rather by going to the Bookmarks section in Vivaldi's settings. The Bookmark Bar can also be sorted independently.

@Streptococcus FYI, the Vivaldi team has also created help articles on how to use/manage bookmarks in Vivaldi as well as how to configure the Bookmarks Bar:

@xyzzy
The bookmark setting in Preferences is just generalized. I was trying to set up the content in the bookmarks bar in a certain way, and I have now got it done. I really did not want the Start Page item in there, but if I take it out, the speed dial shortcuts disappear. I am just putting up with it.
Why does the picture in the help show "Speed Dial" on the toolbar instead of "Start Page"? -
@Streptococcus That's why I was confused by your previous posts. "Start Page" should not even be in your bookmarks at all, unless you renamed the "Speed Dial" folder to "Start Page".
Why does the picture in the help show "Speed Dial" on the toolbar instead of "Start Page"?
The Start Page is basically Vivaldi's "new tab" page. It has two permanent sections: Bookmarks and History. It can also contain multiple Speed Dial sections that display when a bookmark folder has the Speed Dial attribute checked. Vivaldi ships with a "Speed Dial" folder in its bookmarks containing the default Speed Dials, and they appear on the Start Page because the "Speed Dial" folder has the Speed Dial attribute checked.

@xyzzy
I bet the Start Page label got there because I imported bookmarks from Slimjet (which does not have the start page on its bookmarks bar). I have now renamed it. I still cannot move it off the bookmarks bar, but that is not a big deal.
