Get your SD thumbnails back (!)
-
I'm sure you are already aware that Vivldis's behaviour about the SD thumbnails is temperamental, to say the best . Likely if you'are using Vivldi since the first days, like me, you have already a lot of empty/broken thumbnails. So I manged to understand what's going on. Looks like the thumbnails aren't generated while you add a link to the SD, but when you open a link the first time, then if you add that link to the SD the already generated TN is used. So when the history and cache pairing becomes inconsistent you can't have your beloved thumbnails anymore. So what you can do to get your previews back? I managed to get a solution (I hope temporary solution) to fix the SpeeDial(s) #1 go to the address vivaldi://chrome/settings/clearBrowserData and clear the cache #2 close vivaldi and go to to your profile folder C:\Users{user-name}\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default and delete any files stating with Top Sites and History #3 Open Vivaldi, now any SD thumbnail should be missing, click on the SD items, one by one, be sure the pages are fully loaded, and then refresh the thumbnails. Most of the thumbnails will be back in few seconds. #4 if some of the SD thumbnails are still blank, open the related page, remove the related SD entry and add it back, clicking on the bookmark icon (on the right of the address field). That's all. Your SD should be populated again. That solution is surely not superquick but is working reliably, and looks like the best thing to do until the devs will fix the problem, conclusively.

I'm not sure this would be relevant (and I'm not using any Speed Dial images yet to test it out), but thought I would mention it.
With Olde Opera on Windows I prefer my Speed Dial images to remain the same, rather having them than periodically update (except for a weather widget Speed Dial I've used on a couple of installations). So once I get them the way I want them, I just make them all Read Only in the file properties. I haven't checked how they are stored in Vivaldi to see if something like this might work, but it might be worth trying to keep the Speed Dial images the way you want them, and maybe (?) to keep them from disappearing.

Unfortunately the thumbnails aren't stored on FS one by one, but are buried inside the topsites file, hence the problems.
I really hope the devs will realize that the good old way of having them on a folder was a way better method.
P.S. You can follow this alternate way to deal with separate (or custom) images.

I was afraid maybe they were in Top Sites, but thought I recalled finding them somewhere else back when I first started using Vivaldi (I'm probably thinking of the JumpListIcons).
I agree, they would be better in a separate folder, with individual image files for each.
Or maybe they could be kept in a dedicated Speed Dial image SQLite db file like most other things(?) …I'm not clear enough about SQLite or database files in general to weigh any pros and cons of that possibility.
It seems to me the Top Sites file is just too dynamic and volatile to ever be a reliable place to store them.
