Freecycle.org Appears in French
-
This is an odd one. I am a member of freecycle.org, and had no problems the last time I used it. Now the website is in French. It is still in French if I log out (déconnexion), so I guess anyone can test this.
I contacted the moderator who said:
As far as I know, our website for the Barking & Dagenham group is only available in English.
So I would expect that your browser is set to translate the website automatically. So that's not something I can help with I'm afraid.
I suggest trying to contact the support for whatever browser you are using. -
If I log in using Firefox, the site is in English, but I see no option to change the site language, I can only change the preferred language for emails.
-
When connected to a VPN server, some sites adapt to the language of the country the server is located in. On the other hand, that wouldn't explain the difference between Firefox and Vivaldi.
-
@Gwen-Dragon I already tried allowing location detection in site settings, but it does not help. Can you confirm the behaviour?
This is the source code for French Language:
<!DOCTYPE html> <html lang='fr_fr'>
-
@Gwen-Dragon I don't live in France, but we are trying hard to leave the European Union. Maybe it will work again after January 31st
-
@Gwen-Dragon No Proxy or VPN
Accept-Language: en-GB,en;q=0.9,en-US;q=0.8,fr-FR;q=0.7,fr;q=0.6
-
On Freecycle I get <html lang='i_default'>. That's...uh...different.
-

I guess you have a french spell check activated in internal settings at chrome://settings/languages.
No. Only English (US) and English (UK)
-
It is displaying in english to me and I have 2 other languages in the spell checker English is set as the language used when translating pages as well.
-
I don't think spell-check language has anything to do with this. I tried changing UI language already.
The interface is in English on Vivaldi 2.9 Stable.
The only extension that I use is WordWeb.
-
@Gwen-Dragon I installed the latest Snapshot in a temporary folder. As expected, the language reverted to English. echo.opera.com shows this:
Accept-Language: en-US,en;q=0.9
-
It turns out that having a French spell check dictionary installed, but not active, caused this problem. Deleting the French dictionary fixed it.
-
@Gwen-Dragon Yes. I have added various language dictionaries to help other users, I left the French one installed as it is the one language that I know a little.
-
Now all we need to know is if it is a bug in Vivaldi or in the website to switch to French if French is in the list of accepted languages. What do these numbers mean?
Accept-Language: en-GB,en;q=0.9,en-US;q=0.8,fr-FR;q=0.7,fr;q=0.6
-
@Gwen-Dragon Why is the website deciding that I prefer French (0.7, 0.6) to en-Gb, or en (0.9)?
-
@Gwen-Dragon I guess so. I replied to the freecycle.org moderator with the relevant information so you can tag this as resolved. I can live without a French spell-checker.
If I add a Spanish spell-checker the site changes to Spanish.
Accept-Language: en-GB,en;q=0.9,en-US;q=0.8,es-ES;q=0.7,es;q=0.6

I did the same with German. Even though German (and en-US) spell check is now disabled, freecycle displays in German for me.
Accept-Language: en-GB,en;q=0.9,en-US;q=0.8,de;q=0.7
I suspect they just using the LAST indication and ignoring the "weighting".
-
@Gwen-Dragon The freecycle moderator replied to my request to notify the web developers:
Will certainly do so. Thanks for flagging!
-
lol guess what, I clicked the Vivaldi logo here on the top left and despite showing the url https://vivaldi.com on hover, it lead me to https://vivaldi.com/de/ . I have german in the language list as 2nd, 1st (default) is english. Wth?
