Regression fixes – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 1705.4

@kdp8
Thanks. I tried that first, but the passwords disappeared. -
@justjohn
IMHO you can't install a standalone installation in the standard c:\program files\ folder because this folder has a special right managment. for that reason your installation at your desktop and your c:\viv folder acts normal (in these folders you have full rights (in sense of file permissions))so do a normal (multi user) standard installation in c:\program files or a standalone installation in any folder you created and have fun with vivaldi

@starpaw: Also the devtools issues have been on your radar for months. I posted it about it https://vivaldi.com/blog/snapshots/a-few-small-updates-vivaldi-browser-snapshot-1664-4/ here and then previously many times before. Please can we have someone looking at this? Thank you!

@derDay
Thanks. I suspected there was some restriction on the Program Files directory, so tried outside of it. I believe only a small fraction of users read these blogs, and yet there have been several reports of this failure. I'm concerned that if this problem makes it into the next stable release, Vivaldi will lose a lot of users who will simply switch back to whatever was their last browser. Not good! -
Buggy menus: when you expand an item with KB (right arrow), you have to select an item (right, down or up arrow) to be able to collapse it with left arrow. The same when you use KB accelerator.
Page context menu seems to work OK with rarrow, but accelerators have this bug also there.

I get two tabs (both startpage) on startup when Vivaldi is set to start with homepage (which is the default SD).Edit: sorry, I was testing something with pinned tabs and forgot to unpin it.

@justjohn I've been having the same issues with the previous snaphots. I run Symantec Endpoint, the Enterprise version of Norton. Managed to get the latest one running by disabling the Memory Exploit Mitigation component of Endpoint. I only code in .NET myself not C or C++ or whatever Vivaldi is coded it, but it seems to me that the latest snapshots may be using some dodgy non standard memory manipulation techniques.

I see the overlay scrollbars have been removed. I don't understand why in this day of touch screens and scroll wheels does there need to be an ugly bar always at the side of the window. I know this is Google's choice but is it not possible to get Vivaldi's UI to control this as well? I can change it using Stylus but I am unable to make it an overlay.
@justjohn
Vivaldi doesn't seem to clean your profile folder thoroughly enough imo. The main culprit for the large size is found in Default/File System. There you will find temp files of downloads, a few videos can add up quickly. I manually delete the contents, Vivaldi adds back what's needed (Origins folder) on restarts -
@sjudenim That's true, the flags don't seem to be anymore in vivaldi://flags, but since I have set them before, their state in "local state" file is still enabing the feature:
"browser": { "enabled_labs_experiments": [ "overlay-scrollbars-flash-after-scroll-update@1", "overlay-scrollbars-flash-when-mouse-enter@1", "overlay-scrollbars@1", [etcetc] ],
Until it works, I'll keep them. It's too handy to have scrollbars only when needed.

After the first failure to launch, I uninstalled Viv and then manually removed all of User Data, including Default and the /programs/Vivaldi folder. A fresh install still didn't run, and I haven't figured out why. I'm going to try again (I could be satisfied just running a standalone, but I just don't like things not working right, and besides, fixing things is what the snapshots are all about). -

Bingo!
So my earlier suspicion proved correct... It was indeed Vivaldi being blocked by Symantec.
I tried wiping all trace of Vivaldi and installing the snapshot again but still instant death (after launch you see the pointer show something happening for one second then... nothing).
I wiped again and installed stable and it runs.
I'll file a bug report once I've got things set up again in stable...
Edit: forgot to add, I can't change anything in Symantec as it's under control of the corporate admin account.
Edit: VB-59252

Has to do something with sync. Sync disabled no files are put into the bin - under Catalina.problem came back, sorry. -
@justjohn Same problem here, last working version was 1675.11.
I have uninstalled it, and cleaned up any leftover (what I could find anyways) files and registry entries.
Tried to install it as all users, single install and standalone, in both 32 and 64 bit.. can't get it to start, only the Vivaldi notifier runs..
Windows 10 Pro, 1903 -
@chris-jupe Thank you! That made the trick here. Using Symantec Endpoint Protection.
-
@mossman: On my companies Laptop is also Symantec installed. So this is why I have the same problem. Hopefully the next Vivald build will fix this.
-
I was in the same boat, so:
- Installed a standalone Vivaldi.
- Re-installed 1675.11
- Used 1675.11 to import the password csv and bookmarks html
- Closed 1675.11 and launched the standalone
- Imported bookmarks and passwords from 1675.11
-
@justjohn Throwing this here for reference: Symantec antivirus crashes something again. This time Chrome 78 browsers
-
@npro wow, time for people to remove that crapware ASAP
-
@vankom Thanks so much, syncing PWs via the cloud worked! Surprised I couldn't find a local/offline solution, but anyway.
-
You are correct. Thank you. Norton Security Online (which I'm using) starts nsWscSvc, which, per Symantec's website, appears to be Symantec Endpoint Protection in disguise. It kills installed versions of newer Chromium-based browsers, but not standalones. I assume Norton or Google (or both) will get this sorted out fairly soon.
