Vivaldi prompts for file replacement when choosing "Open" in Download… dialog box
-
Hi, I have noticed that Vivaldi saves a file in Downloads folder when option "Open" is clicked on Download... dialog box. In all cases when I want to just open a file on the web, I don't want it to be saved to my Downloads folder, I just want to open it. I think the others browsers, when the user choose "Open" , they save the file on the OS temp folder and just show the file. Is this made on purpose on Vivaldi? I don't want my Downloads folder to be full of files that I didn't want to save. On top of that, when choosing "Open" on a file that had been viewed before, the browser shows a dialog box asking if we wish to replace the previous file and that is annoying because I didn't want to save the file in the first place. My reaction is like "OMG just show me the file". Greetings, and hope the team fix this on a future release. Note. I'm using .deb file 64bit version 1.0.151.7

I checked the other browser…
chromium > saves the file in Downloads folder without asking for "open" or "save"
opera 20+ > saves the file in Downloads folder without asking for "open" or "save"
firefox > asks for "open" or "save", when open is choosed, saves the file in a temp dir and then opens itSo, seems like the chromium-based browsers just save the file in Downloads folder without asking anything. I haven't noticed this behaviour before. I guess that if Vivaldi goes the Firefox way (asking for open or save), it must prevent to ask the user for file replace confirmation when the option "open" is choosed. I think that when the user choose "open", he isn't interested whether the file will be overwritten or not, not even whether the file will be saved or not, he just want to open the file to quick-look at it.
Greetings.

Chromium never overwrites anything. It just rename a file.zip as file(1).zip. then file(2).zip and so on.
The Opera way is more better, and surely Vivaldi will improve on this. But I believe there are improvements more urgent.

In Presto Opera when you Open a file it would be saved in a Temp dir. After removing it from the downloaded items it would be deleted on next start of Opera.

I changed the thread's subject from –Vivaldi saves the file on Download folder when choosing "Open" in Download... dialog box-- to --Vivaldi prompts for file replacement when choosing "Open" in Download... dialog box-- considering that Vivaldi could rename the new file if it finds one with the same name, like file(1).zip, file(2).zip and so on. That would be better than prompting the user. don't you think so?

No I don't
Asking the user is always better than taking silently an action.
Just look at the download folder of the average chrome user.
You will find it filled of crapware in dozens of copies, just because chrome don't ask by default what to do with downloads, no matter if you click on open or save.

Download management is clearly a work in progress. I see little point in objecting to the way it works now, as it is sure to work differently next week and the week after, until developers have what they want. People ought to comment on things not working the way they prefer, while keeping in mind, "If you don't like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes".

I personally like the firefox way, it keeps a cleaner Downloads folder

@guilleagudelo Alas, a year and a half later this annoyance in Vivaldi still hasn't been fixed.
-
two more years passed and still no option to change this behaviour in the self-declared world's most customizable browser
-
@stapuft I guarantee nothing concerning the progress of the browser is because of anything I said.

Relates to: "How important is this to fix."
Not such high priority as you like to have. -
