On the Subject of EMail…

Having been forced for going on two years now, to work with overlapping application windows in order to be able to see both my email and my browser at the same time, I have noticed some things about space usage that developers could possibly take into account while getting ready to roll out the email client. The first is the fact that, with a wide display (24" 16:9 in this case), there is plenty of room to show mail account/folder list plus mail message list on one side, plus have vertical tabs on the other side, and still have room in the middle to show a full web page with blank space on either side of it. Had we been able to do this in Olde Opera, that would have been great, and would have been an even more productive arrangement than what was possible - only being able to show account/folder list if a web tab rather than the mail tab were focused. This, I think, is the most important thing I have noticed. Being able to see the message list while working in a web page is invaluable. The second (and developers already seem to have this in hand) is that it's important to have the bookmark bar permanently visible, even with email open. As long as email is generally treated like a generic tab, not needlessly hiding the bookmark bar, this is not a problem. The third is that the Olde Opera ability to arrange the side panel selector as a short panel stacked above or below the actual panel itself was a GREAT space saver. Using OperaMail, the mail-only version of O12.17, I still do it this way. All of the icons from the panel selector bar are in a couple of rows at the top of the side panel, and the rest of the panel is more than adequate to show all of my accounts and folders.

This is already possible in Opera 12.17 or earlier. Minimise all tabs, focus the tab that you wish to tile it with, click the mail tab, then select Tile Vertically from the Window menu.
The end result is the mail list and message below (or mail list and message on the right) in the left window, and the web page taking up the entire right window.

OK. Tried that. Not a practical solution. You have to re-tile and re-size every single page you open, and each new tab opens maximized. There should be a permanent way to always show folders plus mail list, and always at a given portion of the window.

There is. It's called a session.

??? My number of tabs open and what's in each tab changes continually. I am always closing tabs and opening new ones, depending on what I'm working on. I suppose, if I were working in 12.17 all the time these days, I could train myself to save a session with 20 tabs in it, and never close any of them - simply aim them at different URLs depending on what I'm working on. But then, what if I need 30 tabs at some point? To be safe, should I have a permanent 50-tab session, always changing but never closing any of them? I think I'm too used to having only the tabs I am using, open at any given time. Hence, my tab bar varies from three (two being pinned stacks of 3 and 2 tabs respectively with always the same pages) to twenty-five tabs all day every day. I've always known about sessions, but never could think of a way to use them that made sense with the way I work.
