How we built Vivaldi for Android
-
Thanks for the quick heads-up about the difference between Vivaldi's core and the generic Android rendering. Explains a lot and reassures at the same time.
-
@stardepp said in How we built Vivaldi for Android:
@Ornorm For less than 100€ you already get a smartphone with Android 9:
Mine cost me € 45 (Alcatel 1c)
-
@xypher: great hint!
also it can be managed with Blokada V4 (if you have android <9)
-
@Ornorm Nearly the same here (I don't have an Android phone). When I saw that Vivaldi is available for mobile phone I thought I should buy one just to be able to test Vivaldi…
But the OS is by Google so I “cannot”
-
@potmeklecbohdan I was sure I wouldn't be alone in the valley of tears
-
@Ornorm If that valley is so nice I stay where I am
-
@Ornorm See if LineageOS is available for your phone
-
@Topha Interesting. I didn't know anything about this. Thanks. I'll have a look.
-
@Topha Looks promising, maybe finally a phone with a good (or at least not bad) OS?
-
@Ornorm It takes some effort to get it up and running, since most phone vendors do everything they can yo keep you in their own ecosystem (and then don't keep that up to date so you buy the nextgen phone...), but it prolongs the lifespan of your average phone by years. Also, you can run it without Google Services if you want to. Check the xda-developers forums for your device.
Sorry for OT. But I can confirm that Vivaldi Mobile also works on LineageOS Even though it complained about missing Google Services once. Does not stop it from running very well indeed for a beta.
-
Another alternative is to use a Linux distro, for example Ubuntu Touch.
(Yes, there is Linux for smartphones) -
@Catweazle And Android isn't Linux? I also don't think that it'd run VA (Vivaldi Android) (and I'm scared of (a) using desktop version on mobile, (b) using Ubuntu)
Uhm… let's stop the off-topic
-
@Catweazle Well, the chance that LineageOS is supported is much bigger than Ubuntu Touch, which supports about 10 devices, less than half of those officially
But things might get better in the future, there are several interesting smartphone projects going on at the moment (Librem 5 (real Linux), Pinephone, Shiftphone, the new Fairphone 3...)
-
Okay,. but Ubuntu is only one among several distros for smartphones. It was an idea to replace an ancient Android where Vivaldi doesn't work either.
-
I did get it from APK Mirror. Speed dial is useless, i can fit all my bookmarks on one speed dial with Opera for Android.
-
@OlgaA Then why don't you give your own blocking of ads?
-
Would be nice to have an alternative download source. Google Play isn't available for users of the unGoogled /e/ OS.
-
@ipristy: Please remember to check that any file you download from a mirror or third party service is real/genuine. Here are valid SHA (256) sums for Vivaldi 2.7.1624.163 (the first beta)

You should check any file you have previously downloaded
- Linux:
sha256sum Vivaldi_package_name.apk
- macOS:
shasum -a 256 Vivaldi_package_name.apk
- Windows (PowerShell):
Get-FileHash Vivaldi_package_name.apk
(On Windows 10 you can also open Windows Explorer, then right-click Vivaldi_package_name.apk and select “CRC->SHA256”)

@spinach1536: We really prefer people get the Android beta from the Play Store, since it will allow you to get automatic updates but for those that can't or won't, here is a download link:
https://vivaldi.com/download/Vivaldi.apk
NOTE: To ensure you get the latest fixes and security updates, I would very strongly advise you subscribe to our Newsletter. Alternatively Subscribe to the RSS feed on the Vivaldi blog. Then when a new version comes out, download it and upgrade.

@ruario I appreciate you guys so much. I know there are people wanting you to go full FOSS, but I also know that that can be a great way for a project to get stuck in a bog going nowhere.
Offering the official APK at beta stage already is more than I could have hoped for.
