How we built Vivaldi for Android

while talking about privacy: please allow to disable geolocation for google.com domain (now it's force enabled), thanks

Magnificent article that explains why there are so many browsers on Google Play and why we have to scroll so much to find Vivaldi. Maybe also why we had to wait so long for the Android version
I appreciate the effort to offer a maximum of privacy, although it is impossible to avoid Google sniffing completely. -
not compatible with Android 4.4, Chrome is

@carlonike Please scroll to the bottom of this page, it says: Vivaldi Android requires at least Android 5: https://vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-goes-mobile-android/
-
@carlonike: thanks for your feedback. This is our first beta and we're learning a lot. This is something the developers are considering to improve.

@stardepp: so. I wrote right!

for@gaelle: I really hope for

Tip for those who want ad blocking in the browser right now + DNS over TLS. (Requires Android 9).
The free public DNS resolver that can block ads right now is Adguard that also supports DoT so we'll use that.
You need to go to your WiFi/data settings and scroll down to "Private DNS". Enter, without quotes, "dns.adguard.com" or "dns-family.adguard.com". You can check the difference between these two strings on their website.
Lastly, you need to disable "Async DNS" in vivaldi://flags
To check if it's working, visit https://adguard.com/en/adguard-dns/overview.html and it'll tell you if you're using their resolver. You can also check ad-heavy websites to verify if ads are blocked.I personally use Cloudflare and Quad9's resolver but since there's still no extension support for me to install an ad blocker then this is a quick and easy workaround at the moment.
-
When visiting google.com it defaults to an unsecure protocol (http rather than https)
-
@carlonike: +1 here, it would be nice to have support for older versions.
-
Why don't you write about what you're going to add instead? For example, will you add support for extensions (because you know that there will be no blocking of ads from you). Will the mobile version be your platform for earning money on ads?
-
@MattSolo45 while i appreciate vivaldi for not bundling an ad blocker out of the box, they have also been clear about their revenue model. they have partner deals with search engines along with service providers for bunding a set of bookmarks that are available on a fresh install of vivaldi. websites running ads are dependent upon the ad money. vivaldi does not seem to be.
-
@mattsolo45: Our business model is not ad-based and does not include tracking. This is the same across desktop and mobile. You can read more about this here: https://vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-business-model/
-
@sushubh I know that. I'm more interested in what Vivaldi will do with his choice. I want to have a choice whether I want to see ads or not, because they interfere with and slow down the loading of websites more than once or I let them be. I've written more about what they're going to add to our plans.

I think an adblocker is essential, precisely on a smartphone, where due to the limited size of the screen. Advertising banners and popups can be very annoying, apart from slowing down the loading of pages especially on low-end smartphones with limited RAM

I needed a small place on this forum to spread my tears. I use an Android 4.1 phone (thanks to planned obsolescence) so I can't celebrate this huge step with the community.
I see all the new posts, feature requests, hurray's, etc. on the forum and, unfortunately, I can't share this historical moment with you.
Therefore, I open here a valley of tears because my home is already overflowing.
Here we go :
By the way, congratulations!!!!!

@gaelle: 4.4 is ancient, if it costs you any more time than changing minimal version in build process you should focus on more important things like fixing font scaling, interface, extensions support and of course your huge backlog of desktop version
-
@Ornorm For less than 100€ you already get a smartphone with Android 9:
-
@stardepp I'll create a KissKissBankBank project to get the money

Thanks for the quick heads-up about the difference between Vivaldi's core and the generic Android rendering. Explains a lot and reassures at the same time.
