Feature request - Single-click bookmarks

Any chance of a proper bookmark menu? or at least an option to open bookmarks from the panel with a single-click.

I hope there will be an option to single or double click to open bookmarks.

I think this makes sense in the side panel, keeping in mind one would somehow like to continue to be able to move bookmarks by dragging - which would mean you want to to activate a bookmark on-release (but not if it's been dragged), rather than on-press.
Within the bookmarks manager itself, which should be dedicated to managing, not using, bookmarks, I think it should remain double-click so as to reduce the number of accidental selections of bookmarks when you are just trying to move them around.

Good points.

I think a single-click option is fine for those who want that, but from a functional standpoint a double-click option seems mandatory (to me), both for sorting (as Ayespy mentioned) and for selecting multiple bookmarks to open or copy at once. I've tried to think of a mandatory reason (not just personal preference) for the single-click option and come up blank. (Can anyone else think of a functionally "mandatory" reason for also having a single-click option?)
On a personal level, but almost as psychologically "mandatory" is the fact that by habit I just strongly prefer double-clicking… ...and I'm sure there are many who just as strongly prefer single-clicking.

How are the clicks being counted? When I go into the Bookmarks Panel, I highlight the site link, then click and the site opens. I don't count the highlight as a click, so for me the link opens with one click.
Sometimes I highlight the wrong bookmark, so if it opens with just the highlight, I would wind up with a whole of tabs by mistake.

Hmmm. Are you on Mac or Linux rather than Windows? If I'm understanding you correctly, you're talking about 2 clicks with an unspecified interval between them (e.g., could be a millisecond, a second, 10 seconds, 10 minutes). If so, I can't replicate that behavior (highlight with one click, pause, then open the link with another single click) in Vivaldi on Windows, and I don't recall ever seeing a bookmarks system that worked that way in Windows. I don't think I would like that behavior much; however, I could learn to live with it.
Generally, the double-click issue isn't how the clicks are counted, but rather the interval between the clicks. Whether or not the bookmark is already highlighted (e.g., by a single-click), to open a bookmark in Vivaldi I have to use a rapid double-click (within whatever double-click speed interval is set up in the mouse Properties dialog). And personally, that's the way I prefer it so opening a bookmark is an intentional action clearly distinguished from highlighting or clicking and dragging. (But I understand how some would want single-click opening from the Bookmarks Panel/Sidebar.)
The only thing I can think of where 2 different actions occur on 1st and 2nd individual clicks is highlighting a file in Windows Explorer, pausing briefly, then clicking again to allow renaming of the file. (In this case the pause only has to exceed the maximum double-click interval set in the mouse Properties).
I always set up Olde Opera to require a double-click in the bookmarks panel/window (Hotlist Single Click=0), because when set as single-click (Hotlist Single Click=1) it isn't possible to simply click on a link to highlight it without also opening the link. I guess technically (as pointed out by Ayespy), the in Olde Opera's single-click setup, the bookmark is activated on-release (unless it has been dragged), not on-press. So clicking and dragging can be done without opening. For me, that is easier to do with a mouse than with a touchpad, but awkward on both. And it still is too easy to click and release and unintentionally open bookmarks.
With the single-click setting there are other ways to highlight one or more links without having to drag them (to prevent opening), but they seem convoluted or behaviorally awkward to me (e.g., right-click on a bookmark so it doesn't open but is highlighted, then ignore the context menu and use Shift+Up/DownArrow to highlight multiple bookmarks). For me, it is so much easier to be able to highlight and manipulate one or more bookmarks without having to cautiously avoid accidentally opening them all by limiting the open action to an intentional double-click.

I am running Win 7 x64 as my OS. I really like how the bookmarks and the click work in Vivaldi. With Opera, I had to be careful when I chose a bookmark, because as soon as I highlighted site the bookmark would load that site.
Because of the suggestion – Hotlist Single Click -- I just went into operapref.ini and inserted a new preference and now I can highlight a site, but I must intentionally click (one click) to bring up the site. GREAT!!! Thanks.

All valid points, thank you all for feedback.
But what I really want is a proper bookmark menu. (yes, I know - what can I say, I'm old ) Would a Dev like to comment on that?

Any chance of a proper bookmark menu? or at least an option to open bookmarks from the panel with a single-click.
When we implemented the Bookmarks panel, it initially worked with single-click interaction. We wanted to offer as much functionality as possible, even in the panel. Things like editing and multi-select does not work well with single-click. So we decided to switch to a more conventional double-click model.
I understand what you are asking for, which is something that lets you find and open a bookmark as quickly as possible. I have found Quick Commands to be very efficient, but if you do not remember the name or URL of the bookmark (or you have many with similar names) that might not be adequate.
I think this is something that we will look at, but probably not in the short term. Bookmarks are important to us, and there is much we can do to make them more useful.

Designer, Vivaldi TechnologiesLike a number of other Vivaldi users, I imported my bookmarks (over 300) from Opera 12. However, because there is no bookmark menu such as Opera has, I am unable to sort them into any meaningful order. This is very frustrating and I find that I have to go back into Opera to find the link, then copy it into Vivaldi so that I can continue. So hopefully "make them more useful" contains a tool that allows sorting and arranging.

One thing you could try is to add a folder to the Bookmarks bar, then any subfolder can be accessed from a menu. Right now we have manual sorting of all bookmarks, so if you re-arrange them in the Bookmarks Manager or Panel they will stay in that order in the menu. Does that help?
We plan on supporting more ways of sorting in the future.
