Win10 Hangs when Vivaldi Running
-
This seems to be happening more frequently now. I have multiple browsers running: Vivaldi, Cent, and sometimes Firefox. I also have Outlook and sometimes Excel running. In the most frequent case, after a while, my computer hangs so that I need to reboot. But if I am not running Vivaldi and with everything else going, there is no problem. Today I also got a hang but without FF or Excel running. When this happened, I had Vivaldi running with 2 windows, with about 15 tabs in one window and maybe another 15 in the 2nd windows in 6 stacked tabs.
I am running Vivaldi 2.6.1566.40 (Stable channel) (64-bit).
I have run multiple memory tests with no problems found, so I do not believe I have a h/w problem. I think Vivaldi's memory manager is causing this problem. I hate to do it because I like the features of Vivaldi, but for now, I will not use it as an ongoing verification that it is the problem. But I am willing to help you to find a solution. If there is a log that I can send you that would help you diagnose and fix this problem, let me know.

I would guess and say that it is the lack of available RAM that is the problem. Can you detail your computer setup?
-
@NickStone I would second that guess. I've seen Win 10 1803 just disappear a few times when I had a lot of tabs open. Dig into Event Viewer and the cause is clearly exhausted VM. Supposedly it puts up at least two warning dialogs before crashing, but I never see them. My Win 10 is ridiculously incompetent at putting new windows at the top of the Z-order, so maybe they were buried somewhere deep under Vivaldi and all the other stuff I was doing. But there is never any audio warning, either... But of course my notification sounds tend to disappear as often as my new windows.
Clearly Vivaldi is the most memory hungry app I run. Maybe it needs to implement its own warning system when it has used all the memory available, since Windows seems incapable of acting as an operating system? Vivaldi could check whether its next memory request can be met, and warn us if it can't be?

Hm, I can run it with my usual load of 80 -120 tabs without any problems with my small computer running W10 on 8GB RAM - and my usual load of other programs in parallel too.
I wonder which kinds of tabs you have open, because constantly loading tabs like facebook and some messenger apps can have quite a toll on RAM, as can some messengers.
- Does the computer become slow before it freezes?
- Did you try to hibernate/discard background tabs to free up memory?
- In case you only hibernate Windows while Vivaldi is running:
An occasional Shutdown of Vivaldi helps too, as does occasionally shutting down Windows completely because I have noticed that a long running W10 collects a lot of garbage over time, even if Vivaldi is not running.

I have 8GB here. Never get close to 80 tabs - more like 20 when it crashes.

Never Facebook or any messenger or forum sites. Seems to happen when I'm comparison shopping, a sequence of searches, a bunch of competing stores, probably several eBay pages, and research links from all of them. Often Google Image results involved... I'd guess it is not the number of independent sites but the complexity of links among them (but I can't imagine a mechanism for that...)
- Does the computer become slow before it freezes?
Not that I notice. But my net connection is the limiting factor.

I have no clue there is a problem until the screen goes black and Windows has to restart.

I do hibernate as long as possible, but that's rarely even a week. Vivaldi probably gets restarted about every day, because my extension icons in the address bag get randomly disconnected, and a restart is the easiest way to restore them.
I don't understand Vivaldi's memory use... This capture shows usage with just my home page of links, and this forum page:
[Resource Monitor - Memory]
If I knew when it was about to crash that would be so interesting to look at...

Well, I used facebook or the messenger pages as example for pages that are constantly loading and doing stuff, but some shopping sites are quite JS heavy and load additional stuff too.
To see which tabs causes the highest load and is most active, you might give the Vivaldi Task Manager a shot - press SHIFT+ESC (or V-Menu>Tools>Task manager) and add some columns by right-click on the headlines.
(that's atm 73 tabs, with Settings>General>Lazy Load Restored Tabs: and hibernate/discard after 10 minutes by Extension, see signature)Maybe that gives some clue about what's going on...

I can not reproduce this problem, everything works fine for me.
If the problem is your RAM, you can save more than 400 Mb, if you deactivate the update agent in the Vivaldi configuration (Updates). If there are new updates you can also find out in the forum or subscribe to the newsletters. -
@Catweazle Where do you see the 400MB for the update_notifier?
I see only 4|8 MB and the most of it is shareable or shared, the private set is fairly low - but the Vivaldi process (probably the main process) with 248MB is a bit high, but not unusually high.@TonyK132 I just noticed that you still used 2.6.1566.40 when you wrote the initial post - did you update in the meantime to 2.6.1566.44 (stable)? Among other fixes there was a chromium update, maybe that fixes your problem...
... that goes for all here who did not yet update
-
@QuHno Only in Windows Task Manager:
Would be nice to save 400MB, but...
As for updates, I still have 2.5. But I've seen my random crashes since I began using Vivaldi months ago, so I don't think it is a tiny version bug.

@QuHno Thanks for pointing me to V task mgr! Mine, with 3 tabs open:
My GPU is huge compared to yours! Maybe due to my 3000x2000 screen? And that 488MB jumped to 540MB for awhile when I brought the window to the top...
Actually it shows the exact same numbers you can see in Windows Resource Monitor, but the Vivaldi window tells you the name of the process - a huge advantage!
