[BUG] Address bar dropdown immediately selects by mouse pointer location
-
Description:
When writing something into the address bar, and the suggestion dropdown opens, the item pointed to by the mouse pointer is selected immediately, even if the mouse is not moved.Expected behavior:
It should select nothing by default, to let the user be able to use the keyboard to make a selection that starts from a predictable position (Down to start from first item, Up from last). The mouse pointer should come into play only if it's moved.
I'm not sure if it's best to report bugs on https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/?
I figured it makes sense to do it here to allow discussion. -
Hello there,
@3o5 said in [BUG] Address bar dropdown immediately selects by mouse pointer location:

The form is best way to report a bug.
My Address Field Drop-Down Menu & Address Auto-Complete are always Off. However I can repro your issue by turning them On
Can you post a screenshot of your Address Bar prefs, just in case.
Thx -
Can't repro this on Vivaldi 2.5.1525.41 / Chrome 74.0.3729.134
-
@3o5 I can reproduce it in the latest Snapshot, but not in the latest Stable build. Please remember to give your OS version and Vivaldi build when reporting issues.
If you put them in a note, it is easy to add them whenever necessary.
Specs: AMD A10-6800K, 8 Gb on Win 10 64-bit 1809 build 17763.504 • Snapshot 2.6.1566.6 (64-bit)

@3o5 I reported the same thing several months ago, can't remember the Jira number. Please report it again, so we can get some focus on the issue.
It is indeed a very annoying behaviour.

@MaxKarlErnst hello there.
I can not confirmconformon stable neither. Weird. Today I can't repro the pointer action on snapshot ( buid 1568 )
Thx for the tip.Edit: grammar and typo

I'm on Vivaldi v2.5.1525.40 x86, Windows 8.1 x64. I'll check v*.48.
(A real changelog would help... for now, FileHorse makes it a bit easier to follow, though it's incomplete.)
Was Jira publicly accessible? It doesn't seem open to the general public.
One good thing came out of it: I found out the "Show Profile Button" setting hiding in the Address Bar settings page. Not the most intuitive or relevant place.

Jira is not public. However, you can get your bug status here

If you cannot reproduce this, you need to place the mouse cursor where it can "catch" an entry in the address bar dropdown. Usually place it in the middle of the screen, usually this is where it is anyway when browsing, and it will catch a link from the list once you start typing something.
I don't think it's related to Vivaldi version, it's been like this for a long while.
The people who actually first move their mouse to the address bar, click into it and then start typing, instead of using Alt+D/F8 like any sane person, will never see this obviously. But let's not talk about those people... :face_with_stuck-out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Bug still here for me too: https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/310213

Thank you very much @Gwen-Dragon as you perfectly got first part of the bug.
The worse part is when you need to press UP and DOWN arrow keys on your keyboard to select a specific entry from the URL list.- First because your selection did not start at the top of the list, not surprising
- Worst is that the selection keeps jumping to weird place, not necessarily where the mouse pointer is, and you really are struggling to select your particular row
I often have to switch to using my mouse to end this process that I would have liked keyboard only and quick.

@Gwen-Dragon Thanks. This has been annoying me several times a day for ages as well.
