Solved Horizontal Tab Scrolling Instead of Shrinking
-
+1 Tab scrolling is essential for a comfortable surf !! for me too, it's the only reason i don't use Chrome-based browsers !!! so please Vivaldi Team go for it ! and i am sure a lot of FF users will go tu use Vivaldi
-
+1 This feature, but would like to add to it:
Why not extend this feature to tab stacks? By hovering over your mouse over the tab with the tab stack, be able to quickly scroll on your mouse to switch tabs would be exceptionally nice. This would mitigate these problems: tab stacks get hard to click, because the height of them are fairly small and especially if you have multiple tabs in a stack. -
I'm surprised that, considering all the votes and views for this feature, it's still listed as 'Nice to have'. Hopefully this feature gets more votes.

Optional tabs scrolling like in Firefox.
If it is optional(can be disabled in the setting) I am fine with this feature thought I don't need.

It's not essential actually it's the opposite, when you have a lot of opened tabs(over 200 or so) Firefox like tab scrolling makes your surfing a living hell, because you have a very limited amount of tabs that you see at a time and in order find the one you need(if your not using some kind of text tab search) you have to scroll and scroll and scroll. And what's worse Firefox tends to scroll you back when it focuses on the tab somewhere in the beginning. Personally, I think that it is a waste of time implementing something like horizontal tab scrolling when you already have vertical tabs which are pretty much the same except with a way better ergonomics.

... So, yeah, indeed a waste of time for you.
I'm not a huge fan having a lateral panel that eat like 100px of my screen. And i'm used to have like around 80/100 tabs open. So to me, combining Vilvaldi stacking feature, with, an horizontal scrolling tab bar would be neat.
I have never been lost within firefox so far, i was even using it untill last week but i've been also lurkin' about Vivaldi for a long time. And to me, having my tabs been shrink to the point i can't even know what it is unless i'm forced to use the side tab bar pannel is the only downside.

It's adjustable. You can make it eat 50px of you screen if you want. Also most of the sites are optimized for vertical scrolling meaning that they don't use all of the display width(this forum for example), so taking 100px from the side usually doesn't hurt at all.

Usually site icons can be very helpful to find the tab you need, and site icons are always displayed regardless of how tabs are shrunk in the tab bar.

@System32 The default width at 100% UI Zoom is 180 pixels. Reducing this to 50 pixels is useless as then you can no longer read the tab title. Reducing it to an icon is even worse, especially if users open multiple tabs on the same site. Icons can be useful, but often are not.
On a 1920 pixel wide monitor, even 180 pixels does little harm unless users want to tile tabs. One advantage of vertical tabs is that double-clicking on the Tab Bar separator will quickly toggle between user-defined width, then between default width and icons.
This feature is clearly wanted by a large number of users, but it is unlikely to happen this year so it is better to use one of the available workarounds. Claims that Vivaldi is unusable without horizontal tab-scrolling are false. I appreciate that it is hard to change old habits, but it is possible.
Use the Quick Commands dialogue (F2) to find tabs quickly. This searches tabs in other windows too, which neither the Tab Bar, nor the Window Panel can currently do.
-
@System32 It won't change a thing to what i said up before about me. /shrug
@Pesala Most of time, i need the maximum visible part of what i'm doing on a website, depending on the screen i need to look at. And i never said it was unusable, it's just hard to find a certain tab without using commands when you have 100+ tabs open on vertical mode because tabs are like 10px large. I don't like it.

Thanks. I didn't know about this double click thing.
@Pesala said in Horizontal Tab Scrolling Instead of Shrinking:
Icons can be useful, but often are not.
I can think of perhaps only one case where icons can't be used for navigation, it's when user opened multiple tabs of the same site, but the point that it's better not to use icons in vertical tab representation is absolutely valid.
BTW is it a bug that Vivaldi doesn't auto scroll to the activated tab in vertical view or was it always that way?(I was not able to find an option corresponding to this) I even posted a feature request regarding this issue. -
Anyone over find a fix for this.?
-
Unusable
using waterfox instead Also thanks for the side panel, even more featurecreep eating away screen estate, no i don't want to push a button every time. -
@Isabelle-Sandow
Hi, you can enable show panel toggle in Panel settings to save space.
Did you up vote the request? Only two user like it since 6 month.Cheers, mib

Personally, I've given up and switched back to Firefox. I'm pretty much happy with Firefox, and it's usable. In Vivaldi, if I put the tabs on the top, I can't see them, and if I put them to the side, scrolling through them is jumpy, and I frequently lose my place. Vivaldi is extremely uncomfortable for me to use. I suspect it's not Vivaldi's fault, as they rely on Chrome's code, and they won't be able to offer scrolling tabs until Chrome does. Since Firefox has seemed to have fixed many of their issues, I'll be a happy Firefox user for the foreseeable future. Best of luck to Vivaldi.

This is actually not so. Vivaldi's UI is not reliant on Chromium, and when resources permit, Vivaldi developers will be able to code this.

Another use case I have not seen in this discussion (sorry if I missed it): Vertical monitors. I use a secondary, vertical monitor mosty for browsing, which works very well with most modern web pages. However, as soon as I exceed a dozend tabs, they become unusable because they shrink to the point where I cannot differentiate them.

Horizontal Tab Scrolling Instead of Shrinking
YES-YES!!! Please! -
I use this Multiline Tabs mod : https://github.com/justdanpo/VivaldiHooks/blob/master/vivaldi/hooks/multiline-tabs.css. (Vivaldi 2.9 stable, Windows 10).
I think this is better than scrolling. Is like Firefox with Tab Mix Plus. (I don't miss FF)

@barbudo2005
that's not what people are asking for so much ...
give me a break with Vilvaldi .... if developers don't want to ... stick them in the eye ....Install Centbrowser much better than Chrome ... it has everything you need.
Many many options and scrolling tabs. ! -
Really needed feature. Without it the tabs become a mess soon, and other ways are just a workaround.
