Slow Log-in
-
Why does it take about 15 seconds to log in to my blog?
Since I am logged in to the forums, why do I even need to log in at all?
-
similar issue... I log into Forum, then try to go to Community and am presented with the Login/Create Account buttons.
All I have to do is click on Login and in a few seconds I am logged in but with a session mismatch error. If I log into Community first and try to go to Forum I get the same thing.
I always delete browsing data, cookies and cache (although the latter never appears to empty).
Either takes a few seconds or more but I no longer have the fibre optic service I had previously, so that may be part of the reason.
It may be having to pull data from WP takes some time (If it has to do that(?). -
I've always found this a strange issue. I never have to re-log in to the forum, I have to log in to email about once a month, and I have to log in to blogs every few days even if the "remember me" is ticked.
I thought having a centralised login system would help avoid this issue, but apparently that's not enough and something else strange is going on.
I do see a delay when logging into the blogs, but it's not quite 15s.

Hey guys!
Thanks for reporting the issue @Pesala.
As @greybeard suspected it was a WP issues. We've fixed it now, so login to blogs will go much faster. We're also working on single sign-on.

I think the label "remember me" should be eliminated from webpages as misleading. All it means is "fill in my username next time I visit this login page." It has nothing to do with logging in or staying logged in. It's only "store my username in a cookie for this page." I have literally read hundreds of complaints that "even if I click remember me it doesn't keep me logged in." That's right. It's not supposed to. It's supposed to save you having to type your username.
My pet peeve for the day.

@Ayespy I guess that depends on the site. I'm fairly certain when logging in to some sites (not all, mind you), ticking such a box does keep me logged in for longer.
Clearly there are Web developers out there who have interpreted it to mean such a feature, even if it wasn't initially meant to do that.
In any case, if that's not what it does for Vivaldi, then by all means remove it. I have a password manager to remember those details for me.

I'm not sure that it does. I have been paying close attention to this issue, for years, and I've yet to encounter a site that keeps you logged in because you clicked "remember me."
On the other hand, there are a number of sites that have an option "keep me logged in" or similar, and when you click that, they set a more durable cookie, not just a session one.
-
@Ayespy Ah, maybe i'm mis-remembering and mixing up the two ticky boxes.
Which, I suppose, just adds fuel to your argument for removing the "Remember me" one.
-
@jane-n Even changing my email at WP I still get the "Session Mismatch" error before I'm logged in(?).
-
@greybeard
What do you mean by changing your email at WP? -
@jane-n When I firest created the WP account settings I used my Vivaldi email address to register.
I changed it to another email as it just occurred to me using the same email may create a conflict with the blog site and possibly the main V site. (?) -
@LonM Just seeing I've been logged out of the blogs: Returning to the login screen, and even though I ticked "remember me", it hasn't auto-filled my username.
Perhaps a developer of vivaldi's auth system could weigh in to explain what, if anything, ticking that box actually does.
And if I can provide some evidence for "Remember me" keeping you logged in: this is what gitlab does (source), it keeps you logged in for longer.

Log-in is instant now.
-
@greybeard I sent you a PM with additional questions, to figure out this issue.
@LonM If you don't tick the box for 'Remember Me', the session is 12 hours, but if you do, you'll stay logged in for a week.
-
@jane-n I do tick the box, but going by the history calendar, it looks as though it's only logging me in for about 2 days:
